Asbestos risk

Hi

I would really appreciate some advice as I am quite worried. I recently installed 10 downlights in my artex ceiling . It's an extension from 1990. I didn't realise there was an asbestos risk so just used a hole cutter no mask and away I went. There was no warnings on the downlights about installing so assumed it was just plaster dust. Now reading about artex from a comment from a friend, I am really worried. Am I likely to develop cancer? I'm in my 40s.

  • Hi Billyj. Welcome to the forum.

Questions about asbestos pop up here quite frequently.

It's possible (but not certain) that the Artex might have contained a small quantity of white asbestos.  This was phased out of textured ceilings in 1985 so your ceiling is probably clear, but it seems that a lot of old stock was being used up in the 1990s so it's not impossible that your ceiling does contain it. While it's not exactly safe, white asbestos is generally regarded as the least hazardous form.

If your ceiling does contain asbestos then it's really unlikely that this small exposure will be a serious hazard to you or your family.

We are all exposed to asbestos from time to time, but serious asbestos disease is pretty rare among the general public, even among DIYers. There is a lot of hype and scare-mongering which gives you the impression that breathing a single asbestos fibre is a death warrant.  But the reality is that most people who get asbestos disease have had multiple exposures over many years, often in an industrial setting, and many of them smoke.  Smoking and asbestos are a dangerous combination.

  • Thanks for your reply that's what I was hoping.  I was concerned because the hole cutter caused a lot of dust.   Thank you and all the very best to yourself,
