Insensitive comments

Hi i am new to the forum.

my mum has metastatic breast cancer diagnosied nearly three years ago now but is doing well.

I have found that sometimes people can be quite insensitive/ completely unaware with what they say when I'm conversation about my mums journey.

I was just wondering is this a common thing ? Has any other careers of loved ones experienced this ? Or anyone that has been diagnosed?

I try to stay as positive as I can my mum is a very look on the bright side person.

how do you deal with unwanted sometimes damn rude hurtful comments ?

thank you xx

  • Hi there is a string on the forum called"12things never to say to someone with cancer".its actually a lot longer than 12,. It seems some people open there mouths ready to put there foot in it all to often, some never realise some learn from there mistakes.

I understand it can be hard to stay positive,it effects All the family not just the cancer patient. We've learnt that on the forum.

Take care and keep safe and positive if you can.

    Best regards

    Billy

    Hi Lou,

A very warm welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry to hear why youve joined us. I am glad to hear that your Mum is doing well despite her diagnosis. As Billy has already said, this is unfortunately all too common an occurrence. Some people have no experience of cancer and can feel awkward in discussing it with loved ones. Others are just plain insensitive.

My Mum had metastatic breast cancer 21 years ago and I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 11 years. I now try to surround myself by family, close friends and those with a positive outlook on life. I know that this is not an easy ride, but surrounding yourself with positivity, gives you a better chance to be more positive yourself.

Thinking of you and, always here if you want to chat.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
