Has anyone had similar symptoms?

I have been having some issues with my tongue since the start of the year. It started of quite painful down the left side of my tongue, I visited the doctor followed by the dentist who said nothing was wrong(apart from gingivitis). I went away and my symptoms started to fade away but were still there. I have since been to the dentist twice and my GP who have no concerns about my tongue as I was worried I may have tongue cancer. What I'm more worried about is I still have these odd sensations down the left side of my tongue, like a dry feeling but on on the side, sometimes a tingly feeling. This is nowhere near as bad as it was when it all first started, I wake up most mornings it isn't there but by the evening it's stronger than the whole day. The doctor basically told me to live with it! What on earth could it be? I'm getting frustrated and I feel like I can't go back to the dentist or doctor as they are just going to think I'm crazy! When I saw my dentist last week she was adamant nothing was wrong and she saw no signs of cancer. I felt good but I think my anxiety is playing up again and I can't shift the bad feeling there's something wrong. Sorry for the long post I just don't know what else to do! X

  • I get you mine was fine today and all of a sudden boom dry tongue again !

im sipping water and haven't had tea or coffee all day to see if this helps.

My ENT doctor did say if the thrush didn't clear I will need a stronger medication. So gonna call my local dr Monday as that could be what's still bothering my tongue and hope it will clear. Xx

  • You know eating and drinking doesn't affect me whatsoever. In fact it's probably the only time my tongue feels normal! Strange ay! What does your thrush look and feel like. I have had white on my tongue  for weeks, right at the back, pharmacist gave me oral gel didn't really do nothing, told my GP about a week after that and she didn't really say anything, Iv I try and scratch it it's soooooo sore!!! This is wh at I'm hoping is causing my tongue problems lol.

  • Im the same I feel my tongue is normal after eating. I had just read somewhere that caffeine can make u have dry tongue/mouth etc so at the point I'd try anything to get rid of this feeling.

my tongue is white at back and quite enlarged papillae (ENT said this is fine) but the dryness is so annoying. It's all I think about.

I took my electric toothbrush changed the head on it and gently ran it along my tounge and it helped a bit to take some white away.

did u ever ask for a Swab to be done? I'm going to request a further one done on Monday to see if  thrush is still there. It's awful all this xxx

  • That's interesting to know. I very rarely drink anything with caffeine in. I stick to squash all day long. But it does make me wonder wether I have developed an allergy of some sort.

my papillae are enlarged too.. dentist said they looked normal, aswell as the ones on the side of my tongue.

I will give that a go with my electric toothbrush actually!

no I haven't asked for a swab, the thing is apart from the pharmacist, the doctor and dentist didn't actually mention it. Maybe when I speak to the nurse next week she might have some advice for me!

so I have just woken up, and as I'm laying on my left sode(same side as tongue issue) I realise that my tongue is actually in between my back teeth, so I am wondering if I am just chewing away at my tongue in the night! Desperately trying to find a cause as nobody seems to think this is sinister. Would just be nice to know what the hell is going on.

  • I have just had another look at my tongue(becuase I am obsessed) and I'm pretty sure there's a lump the the side right at the back that isn't there the other side! It's completely freaking me out. The doctor didn't look that far back in my mouth because he is useless, but Woukd it be something the dentist would have missed? Totally ruling my life and I'm petrified. It's the same colour as my tongue I think.

  • Totally understandable and honestly I've done the same thinking there is something different on my tounge everyday. It's probably nothing and ur mind over thinking.
I had such a good day yesterday was was busy and never really thought about my tounge but today I'm sitting convinced something is wrong.
give ur dentist a call and see will he see you no point sitting wondering and worrying.
ahhh isn't it just horrible this feeling! I'm constantly running and looking at my tongue. Even my 10 year old like stop looking at ur tounge mum xx

  • Thanks for replying quickly! That's what I keep telling myself that I'm overthinking. It's driving me mad. I don't want to go back to the dentist as I went 3 times already in the space of 6 weeks, and in my head I'm telling Myself that the last time I saw the dentist they said no oral cancer. I just can't take that answer for some reason! Like I did on the day but now I'm questioning it all the time! Doesn't help my throat is killing me, I do think I may have tonsillitis! Unless it's linked to my issue!!
I am exactly the same, and Iv definitely got the nack of being able to stick it right out to look at! Oh my god my 8 year old is the same and then he tells everyone he speaks to ! Even. Ore embarrassing lol.

  • Hi mumma123,

just thought I would check to see how u are?
I have had a digital detox away from my phone as I'm just torturing myself.

so my tounge seems to be bit better trying not to think about it but I have been using antibacterial mouthwash, flossing and I think it's helping. I usually floss every other day but up it to every nite after my big meal.  Although I just had a few sips of wine and I can feel it coming back I'm wondering if it's all a reaction or is it me just getting over thrush or again me back on my phone over thinking. Thought I would let u know and to try that.

Hope u are keeping well xx

  • Hello Iona

erm I guess I am ok as can be. Spoke to my doctor on the phone this morning regarding my throat, she says it's bacterial, doesn't hurt loads when I eat and drink mainly when I swallow saliva. I mean I'm on day 5 so I will give It a few more days and hope to find it eases off, causing me great anxiety right now. My tongue is still causing weird sensations, but I'm finding certain foods/drink set it off! Tea, hot chocolate, muller yoghurts, maybe I have an allergy who knows. Roll on Wednesday when I speak to the mental health nurse, may even ask her if she thinks my symptoms are legit or if it really is being caused my anxiety, I don't believe anxiety can cause symptoms like these?!

anyway, great to see you have been firm with yourself to stay away from your phone, I need to take some of your will power in doing this as I have spent the majority of the day googling one sided sore throat symptoms! Grr!

glad to hear your tongue is feeling better, I have to admit I was using listerine as advised to mouthwash by the dentist, and it was making my symptoms worse, maybe it's too strong? What mouthwash are you using? Do you know what's funny, when I drink alcohol it takes away all my problems, and I don't mean get drunk haha, a couple of glasses of wine and my symptoms ease, but I can't sit and drink every night I will turn into an alcoholic lol. I still think I need stronger meds for thrush but as my doctor keeps brushinG me off with anxiety I'm not so sure what else to do! Hoping this nurse is going to help me! Hopefully you are on the up and your symptoms will subside more xx

  • Honestly it's seems so similar to mine tea, coffee and I had a yogurt the other day and it went into like dry up balls in my mouth like I was peeling it of the side of my mouth. I was using listraine and it made my throat worse as well!!

my taste buds at the back are very enlarged I can feel them rubbing against the top of my soft pallet (it's driving me mad) but the ENT wasn't concerned at all.

I went looking for corsolyl it's usually for bleeding gums but there was none left and picked up this random one called Healthpoint  Chlorhexidine antibacterial mouth wash but I will look for the other one this week.

my ENT dr said if the drops haven't cleared up the thrush which I still think I have I will need something stronger called fluconazole to help clear. I couldn't get dr today so will try again tomorrow.

I hope Wednesday goes well for you. It's good to talk ive had a good old cry to couple of family members this week.

if the nurse can ask for that swab of tongue. Xx
