Has anyone had similar symptoms?

I have been having some issues with my tongue since the start of the year. It started of quite painful down the left side of my tongue, I visited the doctor followed by the dentist who said nothing was wrong(apart from gingivitis). I went away and my symptoms started to fade away but were still there. I have since been to the dentist twice and my GP who have no concerns about my tongue as I was worried I may have tongue cancer. What I'm more worried about is I still have these odd sensations down the left side of my tongue, like a dry feeling but on on the side, sometimes a tingly feeling. This is nowhere near as bad as it was when it all first started, I wake up most mornings it isn't there but by the evening it's stronger than the whole day. The doctor basically told me to live with it! What on earth could it be? I'm getting frustrated and I feel like I can't go back to the dentist or doctor as they are just going to think I'm crazy! When I saw my dentist last week she was adamant nothing was wrong and she saw no signs of cancer. I felt good but I think my anxiety is playing up again and I can't shift the bad feeling there's something wrong. Sorry for the long post I just don't know what else to do! X

  • Hello, I just wanted to bump this post up to see if anyone had some insight on my symptoms. 90% have gone now. I just have this odd sensation still at the back of my tongue, I don't think I can see anything but sometimes(not all the time) feels like I have food stuck at the back. Sometimes sore mainly in the evening but I'm not sure if it's becuase I keep moving my tongue along my teeth. I know my dentist and doctors have said not to worry but I can't help but worry! Thanks for reading.

  • Hi!! Have u asked for a swab to be taken? I'm having problems with my tongue at the min, covered in white cotton like feeling like something is stuck or like I need a tongue scraper!

it could be something ur eating anything new? Or a little infection.

Ive had this for 3 months I did get a Swab taken 2 months ago and it came back with thrush.  I do have other symptoms sore throat and now 1 swollen tonsil! I called my dr yesterday and I've been referred me to ENT and more thrush Med and I'm so scared. Xx

  • I have just had a little google(I know I shouldn't have done) but I am really trying to convince myself it is just oral thrush, I mean a while back the pharmacist saw it who gave me the gel, my dentist or doctor ( the doctor I don't normally see) didn't mention. I only say because my tongue has a burning sensation. This is a symptom of thrush right, aswell as my throat has started to hurt again. Plus it can sometimes cause burning mouth syndrome which I'm sure is what kept coming and going all through the Xmas period. I'm sure I read burning isn't a sign of oral cancer. And surely my symptoms coming and going and some not even coming back, surely cancer doesn't do that??? Trying to have some positivity, and the only way to think that is by writing it here. Sorry for the long post again xx

  • Hi mumma123,

just wanted to give you an update so I seen a ENT (had to go private) and he checked me and said everything was fine and nothing to worry about. he put camera  up my nose and throat and looked at the one enlarged tonsil and not concerned at all.

The sore throat is going away but this feeling on my tongue is still here. It is like I've a dry rough patch now on one bit and it's all I think about it's so annoying.
I think I'm going to make a dentist appointment to get his view on what it could be. It's literally taking over my life.
    hope u are well xx

  • Hi Iona-123

that's great news! So glad you now have peace of mind that the ent is not worried about anything.

That's exactly how my tongue feels, weird fry sore feeling on the top of my tongue at the back on the side if that makes sense. Comes and goes, more so comes. It is very frustrating!
I had another phone appointment this morning with the doctor, she is not concerned as I have seen a previous doctor and the dentist who are not concerned either. She thinks it's psychological. As I suffer with health anxiety. She's asked me to try and give up smoking! I know I need to but I really struggle with the idea. She's also booked me an appointment with the mental health nurse next week to discuss what I'm going through. So that's about all for me really lol x

  • It's awful I suffer so badly from health anxiety it's taken over my life. I constantly worry about dying young.

Even after being told by an ENT everting is fine and it is all probably allergies or come down of thrush infection. I'm still a nervous incase it was missed, did I explain it right the ongoing questions in my head is endless.

Ive definitely something not right with my tongue.  I know my body so will go back and back till it's sorted although I'm at peace it's not Tonsil Cancer now.

I'm here if you ever need a chat!

  • Health anxiety sucks! It's doing the same to my life! I'm terrified of getting seriously ill so young especially having 3 young children!

I am exactly like that too, doesn't matter how many times someone tells you that you are fine, you think they are lying or they have missed something! That they don't understand your symptoms. It's such a horrible battle.

I feel the same about my tongue but what else can I do, I am trying to focus on the fact my dentist told me word for word she has no concerns over oral cancer... but that does not stop me from worrying! It's not been bad today, in fact most of the time it's fine in the day it's in the evening, like now ya got that odd feeling back again, that when my anxiety rises!

thankyou. Same goes for you always an ear to listen.

  • I get you mine was fine today and all of a sudden boom dry tongue again !

im sipping water and haven't had tea or coffee all day to see if this helps.

My ENT doctor did say if the thrush didn't clear I will need a stronger medication. So gonna call my local dr Monday as that could be what's still bothering my tongue and hope it will clear. Xx

  • You know eating and drinking doesn't affect me whatsoever. In fact it's probably the only time my tongue feels normal! Strange ay! What does your thrush look and feel like. I have had white on my tongue  for weeks, right at the back, pharmacist gave me oral gel didn't really do nothing, told my GP about a week after that and she didn't really say anything, Iv I try and scratch it it's soooooo sore!!! This is wh at I'm hoping is causing my tongue problems lol.

  • Im the same I feel my tongue is normal after eating. I had just read somewhere that caffeine can make u have dry tongue/mouth etc so at the point I'd try anything to get rid of this feeling.

my tongue is white at back and quite enlarged papillae (ENT said this is fine) but the dryness is so annoying. It's all I think about.

I took my electric toothbrush changed the head on it and gently ran it along my tounge and it helped a bit to take some white away.

did u ever ask for a Swab to be done? I'm going to request a further one done on Monday to see if  thrush is still there. It's awful all this xxx

  • That's interesting to know. I very rarely drink anything with caffeine in. I stick to squash all day long. But it does make me wonder wether I have developed an allergy of some sort.

my papillae are enlarged too.. dentist said they looked normal, aswell as the ones on the side of my tongue.

I will give that a go with my electric toothbrush actually!

no I haven't asked for a swab, the thing is apart from the pharmacist, the doctor and dentist didn't actually mention it. Maybe when I speak to the nurse next week she might have some advice for me!

so I have just woken up, and as I'm laying on my left sode(same side as tongue issue) I realise that my tongue is actually in between my back teeth, so I am wondering if I am just chewing away at my tongue in the night! Desperately trying to find a cause as nobody seems to think this is sinister. Would just be nice to know what the hell is going on.

  • I have just had another look at my tongue(becuase I am obsessed) and I'm pretty sure there's a lump the the side right at the back that isn't there the other side! It's completely freaking me out. The doctor didn't look that far back in my mouth because he is useless, but Woukd it be something the dentist would have missed? Totally ruling my life and I'm petrified. It's the same colour as my tongue I think.

  • Totally understandable and honestly I've done the same thinking there is something different on my tounge everyday. It's probably nothing and ur mind over thinking.
I had such a good day yesterday was was busy and never really thought about my tounge but today I'm sitting convinced something is wrong.
give ur dentist a call and see will he see you no point sitting wondering and worrying.
ahhh isn't it just horrible this feeling! I'm constantly running and looking at my tongue. Even my 10 year old like stop looking at ur tounge mum xx

  • Thanks for replying quickly! That's what I keep telling myself that I'm overthinking. It's driving me mad. I don't want to go back to the dentist as I went 3 times already in the space of 6 weeks, and in my head I'm telling Myself that the last time I saw the dentist they said no oral cancer. I just can't take that answer for some reason! Like I did on the day but now I'm questioning it all the time! Doesn't help my throat is killing me, I do think I may have tonsillitis! Unless it's linked to my issue!!
I am exactly the same, and Iv definitely got the nack of being able to stick it right out to look at! Oh my god my 8 year old is the same and then he tells everyone he speaks to ! Even. Ore embarrassing lol.

  • Hi mumma123,

just thought I would check to see how u are?
I have had a digital detox away from my phone as I'm just torturing myself.

so my tounge seems to be bit better trying not to think about it but I have been using antibacterial mouthwash, flossing and I think it's helping. I usually floss every other day but up it to every nite after my big meal.  Although I just had a few sips of wine and I can feel it coming back I'm wondering if it's all a reaction or is it me just getting over thrush or again me back on my phone over thinking. Thought I would let u know and to try that.

Hope u are keeping well xx

  • Hello Iona

erm I guess I am ok as can be. Spoke to my doctor on the phone this morning regarding my throat, she says it's bacterial, doesn't hurt loads when I eat and drink mainly when I swallow saliva. I mean I'm on day 5 so I will give It a few more days and hope to find it eases off, causing me great anxiety right now. My tongue is still causing weird sensations, but I'm finding certain foods/drink set it off! Tea, hot chocolate, muller yoghurts, maybe I have an allergy who knows. Roll on Wednesday when I speak to the mental health nurse, may even ask her if she thinks my symptoms are legit or if it really is being caused my anxiety, I don't believe anxiety can cause symptoms like these?!

anyway, great to see you have been firm with yourself to stay away from your phone, I need to take some of your will power in doing this as I have spent the majority of the day googling one sided sore throat symptoms! Grr!

glad to hear your tongue is feeling better, I have to admit I was using listerine as advised to mouthwash by the dentist, and it was making my symptoms worse, maybe it's too strong? What mouthwash are you using? Do you know what's funny, when I drink alcohol it takes away all my problems, and I don't mean get drunk haha, a couple of glasses of wine and my symptoms ease, but I can't sit and drink every night I will turn into an alcoholic lol. I still think I need stronger meds for thrush but as my doctor keeps brushinG me off with anxiety I'm not so sure what else to do! Hoping this nurse is going to help me! Hopefully you are on the up and your symptoms will subside more xx

  • Honestly it's seems so similar to mine tea, coffee and I had a yogurt the other day and it went into like dry up balls in my mouth like I was peeling it of the side of my mouth. I was using listraine and it made my throat worse as well!!

my taste buds at the back are very enlarged I can feel them rubbing against the top of my soft pallet (it's driving me mad) but the ENT wasn't concerned at all.

I went looking for corsolyl it's usually for bleeding gums but there was none left and picked up this random one called Healthpoint  Chlorhexidine antibacterial mouth wash but I will look for the other one this week.

my ENT dr said if the drops haven't cleared up the thrush which I still think I have I will need something stronger called fluconazole to help clear. I couldn't get dr today so will try again tomorrow.

I hope Wednesday goes well for you. It's good to talk ive had a good old cry to couple of family members this week.

if the nurse can ask for that swab of tongue. Xx

  • Oh also salt and warm water to rinse in mouth 3 times a day.
Hoping it gets better day by day!  I think my hubby is ready for the hills with me  Xx

  • Seriously although it's not nice, it's nice to know I'm not alone with these bizarre symptoms. Sounds exactly like me. My tongue feels dry at the moment but it only the left side towards the back. Oh how strange listerine must be way too strong!

img the big round ones.... Iv never noticed mine before but I mentioned it to the dentist and she wasn't concerned either. Same as the flappy papillae down the sides of my tongue, one side is more prominent than the other but again no concerns. It makes me wonder wether this lump sensation I keep getting is the big taste buds I'm in the back of my tongue but why can I only feel it on the left side not the right even though they are both the same size! Maybe I'm too focused or maybe my tongue is swollen on the left, oh that gives me more anxiety..

I will have a look for both to see which one helps me out.

have you been having nystatin? Hopefully if it doesn't work the stronger stuff will! I feel I need to speak to a doctor yet again!

I hope you manage to get a doctors appointment tomorrow!

im half tempted to call 111, my neck feels swollen like a full sensation but doesn't feel swollen to touch if that makes sense. My throat is so painful, Iv tried soothers, lemsip and strepsils. The thought of gargling salt water makes me throw up in my head. I'm just in so much pain, if I call the doctors again in the morning I feel like the receptionist is going to be like urgh! Her again! That's how many times I call the flippin place!

thankyou, I hope Wednesday goes well too and I will be sure to ask for anything if I don't get much help before then! Or nothing gets better xx

  • Yes totally just the left side for me too with the throat pain and tongue although the larger tonsil i was worried about is at the other side!! Weird.

thats the Med I have been on twice and hasn't made a difference at all. So I'm going to request this other stuff the ENT said.

I am very persistent and lay it out to the dr each time and I even thought at the time with the ENT was looking at me as if I was nuts! He just kept saying this is all either allergies, thrush or sinus related I used to suffer a lot with my sinuses.

I feel bit defeated like u with it all but I'm at the stage now where I won't stop till it's sorted.

I feel the same and I know we have only talked a little I'm thankful I can come on and chat so thank you xx

  • Sorry meant to say yes the large ones at the back that go into like a v shape if that makes sense! Driving me nuts

  • Morning!

I could have written that myself. I was originally concerned about my right tonsil too! How weird is that! And now all my pain is left side only. Something doesn't add up here.

oh that's not good. Yes do so, and hopefully that one will be strong enough to help you.

I need to be more firm, I am a little bit soft and a bit of a pushover, and then feel disheartened when something hasn't been resolved.

when I wake up in the morning, I can't work out where these sensations are coming from, the tip of my tongue but towards the left side not directly in the centre, the back of my tongue at the left side, or the back of my tongue left side on the top. It's like a tingling burning fuzzy sensation that's the only way I can describe it. Iv tried to tell myself allergies, vitamin deficiency, thrush, burning mouth syndrome and then I get to cancer and it's like yep that's got to be it! Why? Why do we always have to assume the worst when there's so many more reason. My throat isn't as sore this morning, but we will see if it gets worse over the course of the day. Hopefully not.

yes them ones I think they are called circumvallate papillae. Google told me haha.

I agree talking to someone who doesn't think I am going mad is really helping, and if you ever need to chat just please come on here and find me.

hope you have a good night sleep too xx
