Good news at breast biopsy results appointment

Hi there

For months now I've been reading everyones posts on here. Apologies in advance for the long post, but if anyone is going through a similar situation then I want to reassure you that your feelings are normal. I'm 26 and here are my good results.

5 weeks ago I went to my GP with a breast lump and breast/armpit/shoulder/shoulder blade pain. I got an urgent referral on the 2WW to the Breast Clinic. My breast clinic appointment was on the 14th day. I was examined by a doctor who found the lump and marked it and my armpit for an ultrasound. She suspected a cyst. Ultrasound showed a solid lump, 22mm, consultant thought it was a fibroadenoma but took a biopsy just to be on the safe side as it had some atypical features. I was told to await a call in 7-10 days for results. I then received a letter dated 1 day after my biopsy (obviously sent before the lab had assessed it) with a results appointment in 3 weeks. Another letter recieved which was a copy sent to my GP, a summary of the first appointment. Honestly the most difficult 3 weeks ever. The anxiety/sickness/crying alongside convincing yourself you're okay is just exhausting.

You find yourself analysing every single word said or read on letters, reading far too much into them, out of sheer anxiety. For the whole 5 weeks I was on an emotional rollercoaster. Fine one minute and crying the next, planning how I'd tell friends/family/colleagues that I had cancer. I often got well ahead of myself, and coming to read some stories on here helped so much. What a community!

Everyone I saw or encountered at the breast clinic on both ocassions was fantastic. Compassionate and considerate.

Thought I was going to vomit or pass out whilst waiting to be seen for my results. Consultant told me at the results appointment that it was a benign condition, very common, a fibroadenoma. Nothing to worry about. Crying from relief and still shaking hours later. He did say he had tried to ring me on 2 occasions to give me these results over the phone but for whatever reason my phone blocked the calls and they didn't come through!

This was truly the scariest experience of my life. I wanted to share a positive story as I know how much I clung to them.

Hope this helps somebody, and I'm happy to answer any questions anyone may have about the process or my symptoms, or anything!

Take care everyone, and stay strong!

X

  • Hello Lozw9

I just wanted to pop by to say thank you for sharing your story. It's great to hear that you had such a positive experience at the breast clinic and that there was nothing to worry about.

As you may know, the large majority of women who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer but I'm it certainly will help other women who may read your post to hear a personal story end so well.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Jenn and Lozw9

I have a similar story to share. Had a near escape as my results of Biopsy came as negative and my lump is due to Fat necrosis. I am 44 years old, with an underactive thyroid and early menopause.

Found a lump in my Right breast exactly 17 days ago. I spoke to my GP over the phone the very next morning and was given face to face appointment with the lady doctor the following day.

The day doctor confirmed the lump is there and immovable so was referred to two weeks breast clinic.

During the breast clinic appointment had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy on the same day.

My consultant was transparent but gentle and supportive and made me clear the chances are 50:50 either fat necrosis due to trauma which obviously I don't remember or the bad news cancer.

I received the good news results after the two weeks wait today.

Lots of tears, worries and negative thoughts during the last 4 weeks. Happy to support other women with any questions, about similar symptoms. I personally felt very supportive of reading and following these chats while waiting for the results nervously.

The most important message is, don't wait or feel shame. Prioritise your health, rest everything can wait in life and If you find any suspicious lump or any other symptoms, get yourself checked asap.

    Best wishes

  • Hi all,

I had a positive experience too if it helps anyone.

I went to the GP about 3 weeks ago with, what felt like a hard lump on upper outside of left breast. GP said it moved around and she didn't think it was serious but referred me to breast clinic. I had a difficult wait of 3 weeks with other symptoms such as intermittent burning sensation and tingling in arm/ hand.

I had the appointment today and the doctor said he couldn't feel a lump and didn't think it was anything but I had a scan. It turns out I have a prominent rib on one side. I'm slim and had been doing some weights, plus have a heavy almost 3 year old, so that caused it apparently. I was obviously very relieved.

I know I searched these forums looking for people who were experiencing similar symptoms to me so I hope this helps someone. I'll also say, all the staff at the clinic were so lovely and they know their stuff. They see hundreds of women a week and most are fine.

I have also find this forum so supportive and want to thank everyone for making it that way. It's good to know it's there if you ever need it.

    Best wishes,

    Jemma xx

  • Hi,

I know this is an old post so probably won't be seen, but just wanted to send a massive thanks to the poster for some positive news on waiting on biopsy results.

I read the post and related so much, I received an automated text today to say I have a further appointment with the breast clinic next week. On my first appointment a couple of weeks back, the doctor assured me not to worry, it was just a fibroadenoma, she was so certain, that she wrote a note on my papers to post the results, she said I wouldn't need another appointment. So after receiving the appointment text, I started googling why you would need a further appointment when I've already had a biospy, and I'm now going out of my mind. Tried ringing the hospital earlier today a few times and just kept on hold for over 20 minutes, dreading this week and just wishing next Wednesday to come around.

So reading your post tonight, after many other really sad devastating ones, you've given me some hope that I can hopefully get some sleep this week. I hope this is an automated procedure text as my initial visit put my mind at rest that it wasn't anything to worry about.

Thanks again poster, it's lovely for you to take time out to write something selflessly to help others Xx

Sending lots of love to all you amazing ladies, reading all your comments sends me into turmoil but also keeps me sane, massive love to you strong ones fighting the big battle and lots of hugs to the ones waiting in limbo, take care Xx

  • Hi!

Thank you for your reply! I'm so so glad it has helped. When I was going through the biopsy and the waiting I know it would have helped me and wanted to share.

Amazing to hear your doctor is so confident. Keeping you in my thoughts!

    Take care. X

  • Great to hear you have had benign results what a relief, l had gynaecology surgery recently and my surgeon rang with the results two weeks ago so relieved that it was also benign, it's taking longer to recover from surgery due to it being quite extensive.

Have a great Christmas take care of yourself

  • Fantastic news!

Hope you have a great Christmas too!

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Take care! X

  • Hi,

I am awaiting biopsy results it's 9 days now since my scan and biopsy. That's good news for you. An HCA told me it's possibly going to be fat necrosis but I'm a bit blown away that someone was allowed to say that as they need to look at the biopsy first. Did you encounter this ?
