Armpit swollen

I've noticed that one armpit seems to be slightly swollen compared to the other. It is barely noticeable to the eye, unless looking at the armpit crease when my arms are down - it just looks like a slightly larger bulge on one side. My partner is convinced I'm just being silly and I have gained a bit of weight during lockdown, so part of me wants to think it's weight gain and some extra armpit fat!

ive got no pain at all, but it just feel like the very edge of my armpit is swollen. I don't have any other symptoms and since it's hardly noticeable to the eye, I feel silly calling my doctor about it.

any advice would be appreciated as I'm not sure I'm checking properly!

  • Hello Newtoallthis123,

You shouldn't feel silly about calling the doctor, they are there to investigate anything you're concerned about. When you are worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers on an online forum, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. And the only person that can diagnose you is your doctor.

    I hope this is helpful,

  • Hi Newtothisall123. Welcome to this forum.

I am not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

As I'm sure you know, the armpit is crowded with lymph nodes (or "glands") which swell up when fighting infection.  You don't say if you've tried feeling your armpit to see if there's a swelling that's painful when you push on it, and whether or not you've got a sore throat or some other indication of infection.  Nor did you say how long you may have had this issue.

Most doctors say that a lymph node should settle down within 4-6 weeks so it's probably ok to wait for that amount of time before flagging it up, unless you have what are called "B" symptoms, which are drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, severe itching, and a few others.  I dare say if you had anything like that you'd have mentioned them already.
