Inconclusive breast biopsy

After having a core biopsy my results have come back inconclusive so within a week the lump is being removed and sent to pathology. My question is has anyone been in a similar position? I am trying to gauge if an inconclusive result increases the chance of a cancer diagnosis of if it's just an extra layer of caution that usually results in a benign result... having had fyboadenoma's in the past (three) all of which have been confirmed via core biopsy I can't help but feel "inconclusive" means there may be something untoward? The consultant taking the biopsy said at the time she got a good sample so I can't see it being insufficient material to sample I am very positive and don't worry in these situations normally but I have a "feeling" that I can't shake with this one... I'm just wondering what results others have had if they have been in this situation?

  • I went for my core biopsy results last week and the consultant wants them double checked before she will confirm my results as they came back as breast tissue. The previous consultant expressed concern over my lump. I don't know how a hard lump can be breast tissue myself and I am worried they didn't take the biopsy from the correct place.

Although not the same as yours, we are both left not knowing and it is hard to be left like this.

  • I am really sorry to hear this but just to reassure I have been through this process three times over the last 20 yrs and all have been benign. It is not uncommon for the doctor to miss the lump and extract breast tissue nor for them to not extract enough material for the pathologist to sample (hence why I confirmed at the time she was confident she had hit the lump and taken enough samples on my own biopsy)

have they taken another biopsy from you, I don't understand how they are double checking the existing biopsy if it's breast tissue and not the lump?

Either way as you say it's the waiting that's the worst how long until you get a definite result, I am being told two weeks after my removal procedure which is booked for Wednesday.
