osophagus cancer diagnosis

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer stage 3 and have come across this forum while googling, since the middle of September, I have had a plethora of tests and have been very well treated by the hospital staff, I’m starting my FLOT treatment in 9 days’ time a regime of 4 rounds 2 weeks apart then hopefully followed by surgery and then another FLOT regime.

  • Hi guys. Sending love to you all. We have just lost my mum to this cancer after only 6 months post surgery. My advice push for the chemo after and push for all the scans you can get after too. If this had been possible for mum then she might still be here. Xx

  • Hi

I too would advise, push push push.  My brother had been visiting his GP since March with fears of this dreadful cancer and was pooh poohed and told it was acid reflux.  Eventually at the end of August he had an endoscopy and a biopsy.  By this time he had lost 1 and half stones in 6 weeks.  He was rushed into hospital on 20th September, and passed away on 25th October without having had any treatment.  I could go into far more detail but would not wish to distress anyone on this forum.  It was obviously too late for him and I find it extremely upsetting that in spite of him doing the right thing and going to his doctor, (and advising the doctor that his paternal grandfather had died of the same disease) he was sent away and not seen to in sufficient time to give him a few months quality of life.

Make a nuisance of yourself, push and push for scans and tests and treasure every moment you have xx

  • Hi again

I used to work in "the talk of the town " in the early 80,s ,  i am off to Koh Samui in a month  and i will have a beer for you and a kiss and cuddle with couple of bar girls to wash it down of course lol

  • Hi Doug,

You are clearly still the positive, determined guy which got you through the treatment and Oesophagectomy. Re scans we were told by my husbands oncologist that they only do a scan if they  feel they need to ie, symptoms.   There does seem to be differences between trusts?
I'm sending positive and healing thoughts to you.

  • Hi Lee,

How lovely to hear from you. I think of you and wonder how you and your family are doing? It is a huge loss. I know that as my mum died aged 51 when I was 24. You were such a support to your dad and family Lee.

How is your family business doing now we have no restrictions? Hopefully you are keeping busy.

    Take care and as always

    keeping the faith

  • Hi Milly,

Thanks for asking - I'm always in 2 mind's whether to follow this thread or not....I guess I'm still not sure. Business has obviously improved now there's no restrictions but severe implications and a big loss of trade due to brexit!

As a family we are all working hard and I have been doing back to back projects for the last year to stay occupied - I guess it's my way to deal with such a nightmare. My Mum still has good and bad days...but we stay focused on what my Dad told us and as always, his advice is the best for us all.

I'm glad to hear you're still on a very good road to recovery and long may it continue.

The offer is still there for anyone who passed by Alicante (we are only 5 mins from the airport) to stop in and have a beer!

    Lee

  • Aw Lee that's lovely of you and we will if we get over to Spain. Brexit grrr - we voted remain but can understand people wanted to believe the dream. Still not something we tend to discuss as we want to stay friends!

I imagine this thread is a link to your dad even though we haven't met we feel connected. As you see I still post and if I see another new post on the site from someone in a similar position I do reply just so they know that they aren't alone.

It's 37 years since my mum died from Breast cancer - diagnosed in September 1985, operation in October. They went to Tenerife in January 1986 and she became ill in March and died in the July. Something you don't get over but learn to live again just differently.

Yes so far so good and we have just celebrated Kev's 65th birthday with a family get together in Stratford upon Avon. Just keep going with everything crossed. He certainly went through the mill having 3 major operations in eight weeks and five weeks later starting chemo again. He has gained some weight back and is now about 7lbs lighter than before this all happened.

Life can certainly be fragile. Your mum will have good and bad days she has lost her other half. My dad struggled - he was 57 and still working but found being part of a bowls club helped and we like you supported him. Your dad would want you to enjoy your life Lee, he lives on in you.

    Take care

    keeping the faith

  • Hi Milly

i have another 9 weeks of chemo to go and yes my attitude hasn't changed , hope you and yours are well , i will start posting again regularly , i currently have several stage one tumours the largest being 2.4 centimetres some have already been stopped in their tracks in the first 9 weeks so i hope it continues , oncologists must be the least positive profession in the NHS as they never seem to want to spin you a positive vibe , but hey ho i just get on with it

    kind regards

    Douglas

  • Thanks Milly,

    Take care

  • Hi Redski

I am feeling good apart from the fatigue and other side effects  the chemo tablets bring , only 4 weeks to go but i feel fine and looking forward to my next scan , i will not tempt fate at this stage by saying anymore , i trust you and everyone else on here are in good spirits , take care of yourselves and yours and above all take it easy.

  • Hi Y'all,

Just looking , and I have not been on since February!!!.
First up- we are all good xx Domestic life with teenagers continues apace (growl emoji).

He has just 'officially' retired. Nagging me to do the same- but I to work for a rest! We are almost on the 3 year badge, remains disease free- for now. He has re subscribed to Sky sports - growl growl emoji.

TBH - I hav also been missing as feeling a bit glum. No good news around.Lots of  check out for family and neighbours recently, quite a few very sick etc. very little good news around. Then that news from the crick institute about how 'clever' cancer cells are - YES,WE KNOW!
Hope everyone is keeping the faith

  • Phew a relief to hear  from you Hilts, clapping emojis  I've been quite concerned as you usually post now and again. Pleased hubby is still doing well. We are approaching the two year mark from his Oesophagectomy his first of three ops!

Sorry that you've been a bit low. Yes losing folk isn't easy. As you say news isn't exactly uplifting so we avoid watching too much of it! Bring back John Craven I say lol.

We are enjoying the lighter nights and have a few things planned. Are you going  to London  for the Coronation? We are staying in London for a couple of nights.

Re work you will know when it's right for you. I found it more difficult than I thought I would and did go back doing some supply but I was only 55 in 2017  when I left for our 'gap year'. Good job we did what we did  as then the world went bonkers then our life went even more bonkers!

We are hoping to do Scotland's North Coast 500 in September so fingers crossed.

Doug good to hear that you are continuing treatment and staying in a good mindset.

Everyone else reading this I'm sending healing thoughts and positive vibes. It's not an easy journey but there is hope and survivors of this awful disease.

keeping the faith for everyone always,

    Milly
