osophagus cancer diagnosis

Hi,

I have recently been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer stage 3 and have come across this forum while googling, since the middle of September, I have had a plethora of tests and have been very well treated by the hospital staff, I’m starting my FLOT treatment in 9 days’ time a regime of 4 rounds 2 weeks apart then hopefully followed by surgery and then another FLOT regime.

  • Hi all,

Just a quick question please. My husband still has his jeg and he is flushing it daily. He was given some syringes, two aluminium bowls plus a bottle is sterile water. He was advised to use cool boiled water as well. Due to everything that has happened I'm a bit concerned about infection and re using the equipment and water from the kettle. I do 'sterilize' the bowl and syringe with boiling water first. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Keeping the faith

  • I have just had my first FLOT chemo - on Friday - all OK so far. How are you all doing post op?? Be very interested to know how you all are

  • Howdee Millie,

This is a v v quick post- unique for me, just about to leg it into town.

    yep, the JeJ......

I think in the beginning we boiled the kettle and filled a clean squash bottle with it to flush through the the day. Any of those water flask type things will do. All the rest of the kit went in the dishwasher on 60 deg. 'Sterile' in hospital means autoclaved at some bonkers high temperature like 400 deg c. We cannot replicate that at home, so what is meant ( I found this out with baby kit) is as 'clean as it possibly can be' and dishwasher is certainly hot enough. I found the stitches around it were more of a pain, prone to getting a bit weepy and scabby, so we put a dressing over that to hold it in place and stop the stitches' pulling on tube and skin

    shortermthan usual!

keeping it up and keeping  the faith

  • Hi Andi1947

Welcome to the club that nobody wants to belong too.

It's a bit of a long read, but if you haven't already - take a gander through this thread as there are a number of us at various stages. Many of us post op, and some like yourself who have just started the journey.

I'm 15 weeks post op and have just had my final flot cycle.

Personally - I'm doing a lot better than I thought I would. The medical team are fantastic, and they do give all the information that you need both positive and potentially negative effects of the operation to enable an informed decision.

Things have changed and are changing in terms of what you can and can't eat post op, and how frequently you eat. It's an evolving situation - and where I can now eat practically all the food I used to eat in moderation,  I'm still building up to the 4 pints of beer challenge.

    Cheers

    Bfg

  • Thank you all - bit of a scary road but so good to share with others at different stages. You all seem very positive- will join you. Hope you soon build up to the 4 pints BFG!! Appreciate your support - very early for me   Take care everyone xx

  • Very much a newbie Hilts - first FLOT last Friday - feeling good - long May it last xx

  • This is soooo encouraging to hear - NHS fantastic - every confidence. How are you doing now dooggreg?

  • Hi Milly

I just used boiled water then kept at room temperature in a jug and flushed out the line as directed , the worst rhing was the plastic part the tube passes through keeping that clean , ther seems always to be a yellow wax like substance which builds up and that area gets a bit tender, eventually the stiches fall out but i used to surgical tape the plastic thing back on , when i eventually had almost stopped feeding through the tube it actually fell out of its own accord one morning in the shower , of course i panicked and phoned the nurse who told me that was ok and the hole where it entered the bowel  would close in a few hours , once it's out it does however feel like another leap forward towards normality , take it easy

  • Hi Andi

nice to hear from you , i am just over a year ahead of where you are now and have continually posted throughout the FLOT , the surgery  and recovery phases in an effort to offer some sort of reassurance to others and a bit of non clinical guidance , although i am 95% recovered i reckon on it taking 2 years to reach an acceptable level of normality , so be patient you are not in a race , this time next year you will be writing this advice to someone in the same position , believe it or not i have found the whole thing to be a very uplifting experience and hope it's the same for you and everyone else on here , got any  questions ? no matter how trivial just ask ,there is a wealth of non clinical knowledge amongst those who post on here , meanwhile  stay strong and take care of yourself

    Regards
