Biopsy benign but they say lumpectomy needed to make sure?

Hi,

I hope everyone doing ok. I am hoping someone has some experience to share with me. I had a small rash on areola I noticed in March, found a lump 1 month ago. Referred to triple breast clinic. Mammo, ultrasound and 4 core biopsies on what they called small group clustered calcifications. Lump showed up on mammo also. Back for results today and the consultant said they were benign ... Thankfully ! and there were some fibres in there.

They also then said that the radiologist and pathologist not 100% satisfied with result so a lumpectomy is recommended to make sure there are no atypical cells within the lump.

My question is has anyone had benign results from core and gone on to have the lumpectomy anyway or was anyone offered other biopsies before going through a surgery.

I am less concerned about the lump at the moment than I am about having possibly unnecessary surgery as I have underlying health issues also. I suppose I am just afraid of the unknown and strongly considering cancelling. If anyone has any similar experiences it would be great to hear your story and how things went for you

Thanks so much

  • I would go for the surgery. I had no lump but calcifications, ultrasound no concerns, had core biopsy which came back LCIS which is not cancer. But to double check had surgery to remove calcification and within the tissue they found an early breast cancer. It was a shock I think consultant was surprised too. That was 12 months ago and I have finished treatment did not need chemo and I am back living my life.  Everyone journey is different but it is best to double double check. I don't think you should cancel your appointment. Hope all goes well for you x

  • Thanks so much for taking time to reply Roses,

I have tried posting a few times so hope this works !

I know there are so many people just like you that have faced far more worry than I am and bravely got through it so I feel like a bit of a fraud !

Your experience has certainly made think about the benefit of going ahead. The consultant made a good case for it too. She showed me the mammo and it's like a white ball with tentacles (sorry for the crazy description) she explained that the core biopsy would only have gotten sample from the tip of one of the  the tentacles as such and that the denser middle needed to be looked out for anything suspicious, hence the lumpectomy.

I will definately consider your experience and try to pluck up some courage. I think it's the general anasthetic that's the fear.

Thanks again and stay well xxx
