Out of character reaction

Hi, I had breast cancer 18 years ago. Initially had lumpectomy with chemo but on fourth round, discovered another lump on scar line so had mastectomy and radiotherapy.  Waited 4 years for reconstruction and have been attending regular follow ups etc since.  I 'know' my breasts well and like to think I would spit any abnormalities.  2 weeks ago I attended my 3 year screening and last week got a recall letter for Monday 12th.

I am assuming it is a technical recall because of the implants but I have been really struggling since the letter arrived and that's unusual for me.  I can't get motivated to do anything and feel worried sick. I got no answer from screening unit when I called and GP couldn't see any info either.

I think I am looking for reassurance from other ladies who have had implants that this is normal. It's the first recall I have had during routine screening since implants fitted.

    Hi Canneb,

Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to hear of the cause for your anxiety. There have certainly been some recalls because of a problem caused by some implants. Although some have had to be removed, most people seem to have coped well with this.

I hope that all goes well for you tomorrow and, that nothing untoward is found. If you can please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.
    kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, turns out it was nothing to do with implant but 2 suspicious clusters of microcalcifications. So I am now waiting on results of scan and 2 stereotactic biopsies. Currently have all fingers, goes, anything crossed hoping for good news.

    Hi Canneb,

This certainly wasn't the news you wanted, although I'm glad that there was nothing amiss with your implants. Did they say when your results will be back? I'm certainly keeping everything crossed for you.

I haven't had implants, but have had a second bout of cancer. You are fortunate that you are still being screened after all this time. I was discharged by letter after 10 years.

It is a very scary time, but here's hoping that your biopsies are clear.

Please let us know the results.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine, sorry to hear that you have had a second bout of cancer. Hope all ok now .

I have an appointment next Tuesday to discuss results.  Am coping better with this wait than I expected - it was last weekend that was the worst.  I guess what will be, will be....

    Hi Canneb,

I still have some side-effects from the surgery and treatment, but am otherwise fine thanks.

I am glad to hear that things have improved a little for you this week. You are quite right . It really is a case of que sera sera and unfortunately, no amount of worrywill change the outcome. I'm still hoping that it is just micro calcifications and nothing more.

I shall be thinking of you on Tuesday and hoping that it will be good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi there,

Well, results day.... One area turned out totally benign but the other is dcis so surgery early Nov pending negative covid test. Could have been better but could have been a lot worse. Phew, so glad the last week of waiting is over.

    Hi Canneb,

I am sure that you feel relieved to finally have your results. I'm sorry to hear that you have to have more surgery, but at least the outcome could have been so much worse. Have you been given a grade for this?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you are getting on.

    Lind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • The radiographer said 1 area estimated 3 and other 4. After analysis, the lower area was a 2 (benign) and the other a 5. I think it is 1a or 1b so feeling very lucky and positive.  Not sure how the radiographers rating map onto low, med, high grades that j have read about.  Appointment with doctor felt very rushed as they were keen to get my consent form signed and send me off to place magnetic marker and avoid a further appointment. Radiographer and breast cancer nurse gave me far more info than Dr.

    Hi Canneb,

I'm afraid that I cannot help with the radiographer's rating map that you have read about, but this is just the question to ask your breast care nurse. I am sorry to hear that your doctor was so rushed. I often find that you get better information from the nurses, who have more time for you than the consultants. Why not draw up a list of any questions you have, then phone your breast care nurse for advice? I find that I often have to leave a message, but my nurse will usually get back to me as soon as she can.

It is good to hear that you have managed to get your marker inserted at this appointment too. Have you been given any indication of when you are likely to have surgery, or what they intend to do?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • The nurse did give me a leaflet and said to phone with any questions but it's hard to know which ones to ask and I almost feel guilty taking up her time because this is 'only dcis'.  I do tend to like to know every detail so have been trying to convince myself to stay calm and just go with the flow.

I hope the side effects from your treatment aren't too bad/uncomfortable.
