Hi new to forum

Hi I am new waiting for a diagnosis would like help on managing anxiety and my mental health. Is it best to contact GP for help ?

  • Hello TOP,

Welcome to Cancer Chat! Waiting for a diagnosis can be so stressful and it is a time when your anxiety levels can be very high. There is some advice here on how to manage this difficult time while you are waiting for important news like a diagnosis. If you feel this is also affecting your mental health, then your GP would be your first port of call so don't hesitate to give your doctor a call. I am sure they will have a wealth or resources to help you manage your anxiety especially if you feel it is currently affecting your ability to function in daily life.

I hope you can talk to your GP soon and that you feel better and don't have to wait too long to get some answers on your diagnosis.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi TOP. Welcome to the forum.

Have you actually had a diagnosis yet, or are you waiting on test results to know whether or not you've got cancer?

Either way, waiting for results is nerve-wracking, and no matter how many times you go through it, it never gets any easier.  Your GP may be able to help, but unfortunately there can be a long wait for talking therapies.  You need to decide for yourself whether or not you want to go down the chemical route.  TBH, the side effects of some drugs are worse than the disease.

Personally, I've found relaxation tapes helpful, and you can probably find some free or cheap audio downloads on the net.  If you're in need of a quick fix, then this 5 minute video is very good:  How to Meditate in a Moment.

In addition, you might find acupuncture helpful - if you can bear the thought of having needles put in you.  You might also find a local private therapist/counsellor who can see you within a few days.

  • Hi thank you for replying i am having tests waitung for diagnosis. I contacted my gp he has prescribed something. I havent taken it yet wanted help getting through the weekend. I am needing more pain relief so have been prescribed Naproxen and something else to stop it affecting my stomach. Having a scan this week.
