Endometrial Hyperplasia and Provera

Hello everyone,

Im a 58 year old lady who up til about a month ago led a lovely period free life.  I then had spotting and to cut a long story short, ended up with a biopsy which resulted in endometrial hyperplasia.  Ive been on 10mg of provera for 7 days, the worst 7 days ive ever known.  The medication has made me bleed more than I used to over 10 years ago, stomach cramps are worse than giving birth and Im getting nowhere in finding out if others experiece the same or if this is normal or not.  I wasnt told about side effects of even that this was the treatment.  It was just couriered to my home.  I want to know if this is on going for the next 6 months, when Im due for another biopsy or if its just the body getting used to the drug.  Any answers, comments would be very greatly received.

  • Hello Vulcan

I'm sorry to hear that the medication you've been given has caused such side effects. Please do get in touch with the hospital or your GP who will be best placed to advise you about your situation.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses then you can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I do hope that things improve and settle soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there,  I didn't get on well with provera.  It caused heavy bleeding initially, and then spasmodic bleeds thereafter.  I had my second hysteroscopy in January and asked to change to the mirena coil.  The consultant said it was the better option anyway, why wasn't I given it in the first place..., And since then I've had no trouble.  I had my third hysteroscopy in July and thankfully am clear so no more of them!  Very painful to say the least.  If you're on the provera and it's not suiting you, go back to your medical team and ask to change.  I've still got it and it'll stay there for another four years by which time I'll be mid sixties and hopefully won't need it.  Hope that helps x

  • Ok.  It wasn't painful having the coil fitted, I didn't even know it had been done. Yes, they can tell how thick the uterus is, I asked each time, they can't tell whether it's cancerous til they get the results back.  Where I live they do three hystericopies and after the third if all well you're discharged back to the GP.  I did ask what if the bleeding started again and was told it's all repeated but with the coil I'm sure I'll be fine.  I had it for contraceptive use many years ago, no bother at all. X

  • You too.  It's scary as you don't know why it's happened.  I'd been period and coil free for years.  Hopefully with provera or coil you'll be fine.
