Post-Liver Resection Symptoms.

Hi all.

 

I had a Liver resection op' two weeks, two days ago, where they removed five metastases resulting from a tumour on my Colon. My five night recovery in hospital was considered to be very good, but since I've been home, I feel my recovery has lapsed. I know it was a big op' and it takes time, but I wasn't warned about how I should feel in the weeks after. I've spoken to my specialist nurse, who says this is quite normal, but, aside from the obligatory fatigue, I've had the following symptoms for almost two weeks and I wonder if anybody has suffered the same and how long they felt this way.

 

Nauseus, with very little, or no appetite for food and drink.

Metallic taste on tongue.

Very dark urine.

Irritable skin.

 

Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

    I'm sorry to hear you are suffering from your resection op. My husband had his on the 1st July and like you is suffering too. He was prepared for the complete washed out tiredness but was also not given any information on what to expect. He also has a funny taste in his mouth and until a few days ago would eat nothing but a little cereal as he too had no appetite, which are I think is normal. He has a stitch feeling all the time in his right hand side and general uncomfortable. Now he has started to eat more is experiencing 'cramp' like pains that stop him in his track. He does drink plenty, which maybe why you are having dark urine if you are not drinking enough. This is a major op and I expect you both will feel unwell for sometime while the body heals inside.

    hello HappySid,

                            you are currently thinking in weeks,you need to start thinking in months.l lost 60% of my liver along with the gallbladder,and although the liver regenerates,it does not do it overnight.So your body is not only healing itself from the operation,it also has to regrow the liver.

                                                                                                                                   l can relate to all of your symptoms,they come with the territory but they will eventually die away.Good luck with your recovery and your impatience to be back to normal,

    Thank you, Jill82. I wish your husband a full and quick recovery.

    I think the thing that worries me the most is the lack of appetite due to the nausea. I was prescribed meal replacement shakes, but I don't enjoy drinking them or how I feel after. In the past couple of days though, I'm pleased to say that I have been eating slightly better.

    Thank you for your reply, David. I wanted the reassurance that this was common and these symptoms were not something that only I might be going through. I guessed not, but am surprised at the lack of info I received re' what to expect after discharge from hospital. I was naive enough to believe I would've just been a bit sore and worn out for a few weeks. I will gladly ride it out now, in the knowledge that this is the norm for a while.

    Hi Happy Did and others,

    I hope your recovery has gone well.

    I'm new here and don't know the etiquette about resurrecting old posts, but this is the first one I read and it's brought me some comfort so I wanted to comment.

    I've just had about 70% resection, only 5 days ago and was semt home today. The first couple of days post op I felt good, but since then the symptoms you describe have kicked in. The hospital staff were great,  and the metallic test which I'm finding really nauseus,  explained when I asked, but I thought it would pass sooner. Impatient!

    But now I'm home, my first night, and a very long way from that hospital, I am laying awake and starting to worry about the slightest twinge, ache  taste, tired but sleepless, etc. Like you I fully expected the tiredness but not the rest - and although I've been told about it after asking I guess it hasn't properly become 'the norm' in my head.

    So reading your question and the replies has been a comfort- thank you.
