Prostrate, lymph nodes and bones- no treatment?

Hi,

This is my first post here- so bear with me.

My dad has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which has spread to his lymph nodes and bones. The initial investigations were somewhat delayed due to the covid situation, but he finally saw the consultant last week to discuss treatments.
Anyway, it turns out that they are not going to do any radiotherapy or chemo which is what was talked about at the start. He's had a few hormone injections and that seems to be all that is going to happen.

I'm completely clueless as to what this may mean. I'm assuming it isn't good news. For context he is 60, very overweight with not the most healthy of lifestyles.

I live 200 miles away and have sporadic contact- I'm never going to be accompanying him to any appointments so can only go on what he tells me.

Was really looking for anyone who's been in a similar situation really, and who could shed some light on the future prognosis.

Thanks

  • Hi hollie.

So sorry your father has found himself in this situation. I could be wrong but think it could be because of his weight, chemotherapy is not a nice thing to have and it can play hell with the body of someone who is fit and healthy..

I was diagnosed Feb 2016 prostate gone to lymph nodes, spine, ribs, pelvis and a lung.

Was working in a metal workshop carrying around steel plates all day.

Went straight on hormone therapy then chemotherapy, six sessions, was supposed to have 10 but having trouble with side effects.

Forth session finished up in hospital kept go into a coma.

Specialist have to weigh up what his body can stand.

If he could get weight off and get a bit fit he would have more chance of treatment.

Hope i haven't upset you with what I've put but couldn't think of another way but the truth.

There is a chance that hormone therapy will slow it down.

    Hope something gets sorted.

    Billy

P.s i was diagnosed at 64 only weighed 10.5 stone.

  • Hi Billy,

Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry you are in this situation also.

You could well be right, he is almost double your weight.

He really doesn't seem that bothered about it all- it could well be that he is putting on a brave face but as he feels well and hasn't had any ill effects as such, I'm not sure he appreciates how serious this could be. I don't know if they would have said anything about him trying to lose some weight- it's possible as he did mention his weight to me, but more in terms of he'll be heavier as soon as the pubs reopen. He is a very heavy drinker. To be honest, I always thought it would be his liver that got him first

I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens next.

    Thanks again- take care

    Hollie

  • Hollie.

It's quite possible as you said how doesn't realise how bad he is.

Only reason mine got found was i kept being sick tests showed i had a hurnea, but one test showed something else wrong so more tests. But felt fine no problems anywhere.

So really i was lucky if not for the hurnea it could have been to late to treat.

Wish i could think of something you could say to him to make him change his ways a little, but all i can say is good luck and best wishes to you and your father for the future.
