Unusual breast skin

Hello.

I'm 19 years old, and I've just been to see my doctor today. Yesterday I found a patch of red skin on my breast. Before then, I'd noticed my breast had swollen, but I assumed it was just growing, as they tend to do at various times of the month, just to throw you.

He has prescribed me some antibiotics for this week, and he said to get in touch next week if things haven't changed, but to get in touch sooner if things get worse. He seemed really concerned, and I know from family experience that this is a way of ruling out mastitis, and approaching a diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer. I'm scared. I'm coping well enough, but I tend to push things into my head and not share the worst problems I have with anyone. Does anyone have any advice on how to get through this week of trying antibiotics?

  • Hi Bluebee

I think if your GP was really concerned that your symtoms could be cancer he wouldn't be prescribing antibiotics and leaving you for a week. Possible IBC would trigger an urgent referral to the breast clinic. I would adhere to the antibiotics intake and see how things go. Try and keep yourself busy and stay away from online material on breast cancer as this won't help you. At the moment all you know is that you have something that needs treated by antibiotics. Hope the antibiotics work sn your symptoms disappear.

  • Since I've started the antibiotics I've noticed no improvement. I'm due to speak to/see my doctor on Tuesday.

Tell a lie. I've seen one difference. The redness seems to come and go, literally every other day I come back to check and it's back. But the breast is still significantly swollen and the pain (which I do realise I hadn't mentioned) still shoots out ever so often.
