39 sessions of radiotherapy done!

Following my 39 sessions of radiotherapy to target aggressive localised cancer in prostate, lymph nodes non affected, though Gleason score was 8/9. Surgery wasn’t an option. Unsure if the decision was based on my age as I just turned 70 years old when diagnosed September 2019. Anyway keen to pursue information on any supplements, vitamins and minerals that would reduce and slow regrowth. Whilst following the dietary recommendations such as tamatoes broccoli garlic etc, I’m wondering what else is there? I take 1000mg if vitamin c which is helping with my energy levels. Whilst researching I came across Penoxal which is sold as a natural dietary supplement stating to have a positive effect on the immune system, associated with proposed endless benefits for cancer sufferers and those going through treatment. The review section highlights that an individual reported lowered PSA following consumption of penoxal.  I would be delighted if someone could give me feedback about this or any other remedy which would potentially slow regrowth. There is so much proposed supplements to support prostate health that I feel so over whelmed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated at this time.

  • Hello W.E,

Well done for getting through 39 radiotherapy sessions! It's great news that the lymph nodes were not affected. I hope that you will meet others here who have found themselves in a similar position.

There is no reliable evidence that dietary or nutritional supplements can prevent, cure or control the growth of cancer. It is really important to check with your specialist before you take any supplements. You can read more about vitamins and diet supplements on this page. Your specialist will also be in the best position to advise you or give you some suggestions on this.

Our nurses are available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you want to have a chat with them about all this!

    Best wishes,

  • Hi W.E

Alot of these things don't make any difference. Main thing I've found is cancer feeds on sugar. Don't know if it's working but I've kept my intake low.

I was diagnosed Feb 2016 prostate gone to lymph nodes, spine, ribs, pelvis and a lung classed as palliative care have hormone therapy for life. And chemo when neaded.

My psa was 1581 stage 4 gleason 8.

Was still working in metal fabrication and welding shop had to retire at 67 to look after my disabled wife she needs 24,/7 care she has Alzheimers and parkinsons.

Still feeling fine doing all the household things to keep me busy and gardening. I always keep a monitor with me to be sure the wife is OK

P.s last psa reading Feb this year was 2.9 oncologist not going to do anything till it gets to 20 so quite a wait yet. Oh psa did go down to 0.03 two years ago.

    Good luck with your future.

  • Thanks so much for replying to my message. Your a whole good one, looking after your wife and all. That’s very tough after what you have come through. I’m still working away and enjoy my farming time.

Really good point about the sugar, which is something I enjoy. I have cut down greatly on my sugar intake but could do better. There is so many supplements that you could be fooled into buying which actually contain high levels of vitamin E, zinc and selenium which have actually shown to increase the growth of cancer cells in studies. These are vitamins that we would get in our diet anyway.

I will continue with my vitamin c for my immune system and low sugar intake for now. I’ll let you know what my PSA levels are following my next consultation.

    Many thanks for your reply.
