HPV positive and Low grade dyskaryosis

Hello I received my smear result back this weekend and it said I have HPV positive and low grade dyskaryosis. I am so scared, I have always kept up tp date with my smears and they have always been clear. I have been with my husband for 13 years. I have been referred for a colposcopy. Please can anyone give me so advice about what this means. I am not sleeping, I cant face food and I cant stop crying. I have 2 children and the thought of what this could mean terrifies me. How do I get rid of HPV? I havent had any irregular bleeding and nothing has been picked up im previous smears why am I testing positive for HPV now when iv been married to the same person for 13 years. Please if anyone could help or maybe tell me your story.

  • Hello, I'm so worried. I had my smear results on Friday saying I am hpv positive with low grade dyskaryosis and am awaiting a referral to the colposcopy clinic. I'm 48 and am sure I contracted HPV 11 years ago. My smear in 2017 was normal although they weren't testing for HPV then. I'm so frightened and looking online it says that most women clear HPV within 2 years of contracting it. I seem to be in the smaller percentage where the virus is persistent. I'm in the peri menopause stage - irregular periods now and worried that the virus has lay dormant all this time and is now starting to cause cell changes in the cervix. If I've had HPV for 11 years will it ever go away?

I'm so frightened of getting ill and for my children. My own mum died of ovarian cancer at 55 and I know it's not linked but it's bringing back all the worry. I can't eat and feel so sick with worry.

  • Hi worried Sarah,

there seems to be a lot of us in the same boat and it's so good that we have this forum, for me Elena has made me feel better and she is amazing but then I revert back, which is only normal I spose...

Elena said for me to call the hospital, I had my results back the same day as you,I called them today and  she found me on the system and pulled it off herself as she hadn't received it from my gp. She explained why the wait was long but said it's because it's low grade and picked up via a smear which is kind of good... I am on the cancellation list and so can go up anytime..

can you try to call the, like I did today?

  • I have just been up to the hospital following a cancellation, had some biopsies taken and have to wait 6 weeks or so for the results.

It didn't hurt at all and was straight forward, I was just nervous, a lot!

the dr stated she could see the issue and was low grade, so that was good....

now just the waiting game for me

I do think it's worth calling as I wouldn't of been in today without it and would still have to wait weeks to even be in the position I am now...

  • Thank you so much for replying. The letter I received on Friday said I should hear within 2 weeks about a date for the colposcopy and if I don't hear to contact my GP where I had the smear. I think I'll give it to mid next week and call them. I can't eat or think about anything else with the worry. It's so scary when it comes out of the blue after all normal smears. It's just so frightening that this virus has been in my system for so long without me knowing and I haven't been able to fight it off. I'm going to buy lots of vitamins today and eat more fruit and give up my wine to try to boost my immune system. X

  • That's so good you got seen today and that they could see it was low grade. I hope you feel a little better x

  • I do feel a little better now it's been done, it's the dreaded waiting game now though...and then what happens if it actually comes back worse?

my mind just does overtime....the Dr told me not to google and to look at a website called jo's trust, maybe something to look at for you too?

    x

  • I came across them. Been looking at so many sites. I don't know if that helps or makes it worse! I'm like you. I'm a worrier at the best of times. Just bought lots of vitamins and fruit and an immune system boosting soup. I read in one study papaya is good so I bought one of those. My letter is from the cervical screening administration services so I'm not assigned to a hospital yet and no contact details on the letter. I'll chase my GP next week. Just want to get the examination over with and at least have some reassurance if it doesn't look too bad. It feels like a nightmare though doesn't it? X

  • I feel so tired now,I think it's all the last few days and the mental state I have been in...

my letter was the same as yours but I did yet another google search to see which hospital I would go to, you need to do whatever feels best for you..

it does feel awful but not real in a weird way x

  • It's draining isn't it, the worry. I've lost 5 lbs in weight since Friday as can't eat. I wanted to lose some weight but not like this! I'm near 3 hospitals but have a feeling which I will be called to. Did you just ring the switchboard and ask for the department that does the procedure?

  • Yes so I am in 3 hospital catchment areas also, so I just called all of them, one said they didn't do it so it was out of the others. When I got through to switchboard  I just asked for colposcopy in gynaecology and that was it, really helpful people...

It also maybe that virus has been laying dormant for 11 years and it's just become active..xx

  • Thank you so much. I think I will give it a try, there's no harm. The waiting times can be so long. I've just got an appointment for my son at the hospital (Dermatology Dept) I think I'll be referred to and his appointment is the end of October. I can't wait that long for this and it feels unsafe to. Thank you so much x
