High grade (severe) dyskaryosis - letter

Hi all,

My wife got a letter (dated March 26) from NHS Cervical screening which sates she is HPV positive and has high-grade (severe) dyskaryosis. The letter also states that she'll be sent a date for her colposcopy appointment in the next days - hasn't come yet.

My wife will be 35 years old in six months, and she hasn’t given birth in her life. Also this was her first smear test – thank god she finally took time to do it a couple of weeks ago..

At first we didn't think it was serious at all, as apparently most women at some point in their life has HPV but the "high-grade" part in fact worries me.I've read in this forum that only 6 out of 100 women have high-grade dyskaryosis.

I've also researched some of the forum posts and seen many people asking similar questions on what to expect but there are not many posts written AFTER the colposcopy.

How serious is this situation? Is there anything we should (or not) be doing until the colposcopy? If anyone can provide any info, that’d be hugely appreciated.

It says the colposcopy will happen in the hospital clinic. Is it the only place that it can be done? I'm thinking different specialised clinics maybe? Considering the corona virus situation nowadays, I’m also concerned 1- appointment could be delayed 2- hospitals are not the best places to be around these days.

Many thanks,

  • Hi cokonat,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. We have some information about the colposcopy procedure here which may be useful.

You can also read about screening results here which explains a little more about what it means, next steps, and why those next steps are taken.

I know things are particularly unsettling at the moment with everything going on, but try to trust in the medical team and take things one step at a time.

If you'd like to discuss anything further, you can reach our nurses on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Meanwhile if anyone here has experience to share on this, then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hello there

I'm looking for advice I've had my results back from my smear test which has come back HPV positive and high grade ( severe) Dyskaryosis. This has left me really worried and scared I've been bleeding on and off for sometime which I put down to implant needing changing . I had the old one taken out and a new one put in . I stopped bleeding for 5days but now started again some times a lot sometimes just spotting. I've also found a black mark on my vulva which has left me worried I'm waiting for a letter to go to see colposcopy. But I can't help thinking the worse . Ive lost my appetite and weight and just don't seem to want to eat feel hungry anymore .

any advice would be great to put my mind at rest .

  • Hi,

don't be scared as you'll be in very good hands.

I got the same letter in early August.

my colposcopy appointment was 7 days later.

they did a LLETZ treatment to remove the bad cells.

7 days later I was called into the hospital- I was so unbelievably scared.

the doctor was absolutely amazing. She said they removed early cancer and that I'd need another LLETZ to remove the rest of the bad cells.

    good luck

  • Hello Hooch

thank you for your reply. So the cells was early cancer? Do you have to have regular checkups now? Or after they are removed that's it it won't come back?

I can't help but worry a little with the bleeding and  dark black mark ive found I'm worried even more .

I hope you are feeling ok is the treatment bad dose it hurt?
