Does my high fecal calprotectin level point to bowel cancer?

I have been having abdominal discomfort throughout the last 3 months. Some weeks worse than others. At stages I have has loose bowel movement, but for the most part it's been normal. On occasions I have noticed blood, but on the outside and I know that I have suffered from anal tears numerous times over the last few years.

I did have a spell a couple years back where I was in and out of the doctors every other week for about 3 months with belly problems, from sharp pains to persistent tenderness what seems like all over.

I have noticed that I am very gassy, but always but this down to IBS beforehand. Anyway, over the last couple of months I've had three sets of blood tests, including CRP, but these came back negative. I do however have a stool test which returned with what the doctor said was very high fecal calprotectin. i have a colonoscopy booked for in a month time. Should I be worried? I've seen so many posts online linking FC to Bowel Cancer. I'm trying not to worry myself to much. The doctor said that the chances are very low because I'm in my early 20s, but I don't want that to be overlooked.

IBD is suspected, but I just can't see it myself. It's driving me up the wall though. Anyone experienced anything similar or can offer advise :/?

  • Thanks think I will feel happier when booked in for colonoscopy hopefully be soon

  • Hoping we all get the all clear and can get treatment for whatever symptoms everyone is having :-)

  • Had the Colonoscopy today, thankfully all clear and no signs of any inflammation. Did take away a 3mm flat Neoplastic Polyp near rectum that's she said is nothing at all to worry about. Prep was a bit yuk. Tried the colonoscopy without sedation or pain relief, as I'm quite small the first turn around rectum was to difficult so gave me sedation and pain relief and there after didn't even realise it was being done really. Also had a few internal piles. So glad it's over, feel drained tonight.

  • Hi my calprotectin was 1.252 two weeks ago and now 6.501 I'm terrified I have chrohns disease and ulcerative colitis

  • Inflammation doesn't always mean you have Crohns or UC. An infection, Diverticulitis, and Gastritis can also cause this. As can taking ibuprofen tablets. Best get yourself a colonoscopy and gastroscopy, to find out what is going on....

  • Thanks I have had chrohns and ulcerative colitis since 1995 was just unlucky to get both they have told me that my bowel all over is very inflamed but getting worse just don't want it to turn to sepsis or something else like they have told me said I am one of the worst cases they have seen thanks for your help I'm having cameras and biopsys done again soon

  • Hi just wanted to ask how are you doing now?

  • Hi,I've had IBS si ce 2003 and earlier this year was getting server pain in my right hand side of my stomach had gastroscooy and found a icm lesion on my intestine that was causing blockage, spent 3 days in hospital and my calprotectin levels are at 787 in May 745 in September, have been diagnosed with crohens, not what I was expecting but not as bad as I was expecting, when I looked up symptoms of crohens it all made sense. Worring about something it might possible not be just adds to the pain etc as stress just feds it, I have stomach and liver cancer in my family history, so yes it did cross my mind, but I also thought I've done the right thing by going to the doctors, if caught early that's a plus and having watched my dad fight it for 9 years and seeing his strength I took on the mind set of I will be okay no matter what it is, my point being is all the right tests are being done and you've put yourself into the right hands of a doctor, it will get sorted one way or another, be positive within your thoughts, but also share your fears with loved ones don't deal with it on your own, sharu g it will eliminate some of that stress and ease some of that pain, yes I only have crohens and have to inject myself 2 weekly but after 6 months I am starting to feel like me again and not allowing it to control my life, I hope you get good results and if not what you expected you will get through it, you are a stronger person than you know and it will definatley make you see life differently whether good or bad outcome, our time here is too previous to be wasted on worring about something we can not change, hope ur outcome is positive, sending you love and positive vibes
