Does my high fecal calprotectin level point to bowel cancer?

I have been having abdominal discomfort throughout the last 3 months. Some weeks worse than others. At stages I have has loose bowel movement, but for the most part it's been normal. On occasions I have noticed blood, but on the outside and I know that I have suffered from anal tears numerous times over the last few years.

I did have a spell a couple years back where I was in and out of the doctors every other week for about 3 months with belly problems, from sharp pains to persistent tenderness what seems like all over.

I have noticed that I am very gassy, but always but this down to IBS beforehand. Anyway, over the last couple of months I've had three sets of blood tests, including CRP, but these came back negative. I do however have a stool test which returned with what the doctor said was very high fecal calprotectin. i have a colonoscopy booked for in a month time. Should I be worried? I've seen so many posts online linking FC to Bowel Cancer. I'm trying not to worry myself to much. The doctor said that the chances are very low because I'm in my early 20s, but I don't want that to be overlooked.

IBD is suspected, but I just can't see it myself. It's driving me up the wall though. Anyone experienced anything similar or can offer advise :/?

  • Hi Luc

I had my results back from the faecal test and its quite high - 3624. I'm booked in for a sigmoidoscopy on Monday 21st June. I've had a few over the past 3 years but this is the first time they've actually tested my faeces.

I have no idea what I have. Could be IBD, UC or even Crohn's but hoping its not cancer!

Its quite informative reading all the comments about other people's experiences though and helpful too.

  • Hey Chels,

I had my proceedure yesterday. Feel extremely sorry for myself today ugh, so groggy and stomach is awful.

Doctors said it was very obvious straight away. Ive been diagnosed with total ulcerative colitis. They took biopsies, took extra bloods and did x rays. But thankfully, cancer not mentioned. Just got to get my head around living with this now...

wishing good luck to anyone else out there worried, or struggling

  • Hello. I've just been scanning through this whole conversation. I was diagnosed with UC in 2009. Been happily in remission for most of that. Then I started getting constipated whilst pregnant with my daughter. She is now 3.5 yes old. Been getting all sorts of changeable BM , have been using laxitives and all sorts. Then Sept last year I started getting really really foul smelling flatulance and symptoms worsened. Had FC come back at >700 in Nov, >900 in January 2021 and just last week they came back as >7000.

I'm in so much pain and discomfort but they don't seem too concerned because I've a history of UC but those levels scream CRC to me.

Does anyone have any further information or have a CRC diagnosis after FC levels that high?

    Please help, I'm freaking out.

    TIA Sam

  • Did you ever find out what your cause was?

  • Hi, obviously your going through the same as me and looking answers. What your situation?

  • Last August had bad Constiaption for a while with blood etc after taking Amatriplline. Had mild Constiaption on and off for 2 months then in December looser stools and stomach aches mainly below belly button and caused by gas. Had numerous home fit tests and Calprotection/Lactoferrin tests all negative (sheriprotect got rid of bleeding spots). 7 months of being fine. Few weeks ago stomach felt off, then last sat looser stool and almost feels like I'm back in that 3/4 weeks in December. Gassy again always starts in easy hours looser stools although not all time. Oddly had a postive fit test but 4/5 since that are normal (did have a barium swallow a few days before they said could have caused a false positive). Calprotectin test normal but oddly Lactoferrin has a shadow over line of home test so hard to say that's a positive as normally both raised together. I have a Colonoscopy Tuesday week. What's your symptoms?

  • Sorry to hear, did you see the doctor last Aug/Dec time?

Are you going private or did you get seen quickly enough through NHS?

You seem to be taking medication, did you go give them you?

For a while I had an itchy bum and some bleeding when pooing, but I googled the symptoms and put it down to piles. But last month it was really sore to poo and then after I felt like I still needed to go. Then I had a stomach bug at work and felt like crap for a few days. So and I  decided to see the doc .

She checked me over and said I had a slight tear from pushing to hard but no sign of haomroids or piles. She asked for a stool sample and it came back 120 calprotein so she has asked for a colonsecope to see why.

I feel grand now, no symptoms, I've been taken orange juice and high fibre diet to keep my  stool so my butt can heal.

Just got anxiety about what it all means. I rang and asked how long so the scope and they said like 10 months. So going private.

  • Went private in December and specialist said colonoscopy, I did ask for virtual one which he said was fine under nhs but they didn't contact me until April and may only giving me 5 days notice which due to work I couldn't do, also had no symptoms at all.

not taking medication, I did do probiotics but made me extra gassy. Internal pils you can't always tell or feel by when I took Sheriprotoct that cleared them up. Normally raised Calprotectin is linked to one form of IBD. Yeah scopes are taking forever at the moment due to backlog. Saying that I'm dreading Tuesday week

  • My doctor didn't give me much details, getting bloods done on Wednesday so have a week of waiting for results on that. I'm going to private next Monday with the test results. The scope private is still gonna be 10 weeks they said. I'm hoping the inflammation is down and is was just a virus or something.

Not looking forward to a scope but can't stick this worry.

Keep me posted. It's nice to speak to someone else

  • Bloods aren't always a good indicator with bowel, I have had 4/5 lots over last year and all have been normal (one set late back). Your levels of Calprotectin don't seem crazy high hopefully an infection or something as you say.

Yeah like wise, I hope you get some good news and fast results to help put your mind at ease.
