Bleeding after sex post lletz

hey I was wondering if anyone could shed some light. I had lletz procedure on 30/09/19 and recently had sex for the first time since. Since then I’ve been bleeding really heavily almost like a period bleed but it’s not my time of the month yet. Not due for another two weeks. Has anybody else had really bad bleeding? Should I go see someone or is this normal?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Lookingforsomeguidance,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It looks like this is a fairly common side effect according to Jo's Trust, however due to the time since you had the procedure it might be good to speak to your doctor to give you peace of mind about this as they will be best placed to advise. So perhaps you could make an appointment to find out more and hopefully this will help.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi I had loop excission I think it's the same thing as lletz on 10th Feb and had sex for the first time this week now 3 month after and I have had a brown discharge the day after and belly ache like period pains and it's going darker. This is also scaring me as I had CIN3 and hpv positive results. I suffer bad from health anxiety and worry that something is wrong.

  • Hi, I had a lletz procedure 4 years ago... I started bleeding after sex 2-3 years after this was done. Now I mostly bleed every time! I had this checked out and apparently it's just the scaring that hasn't healed. This is a horrible thing to deal with every time you want to get intimate with your partner. Obviously I would rather this side effect than have cancerous cells on my cervix but I was wondering if anyone else had had a similar experience, I wonder whether I should go back to the doctors... I had silver nitrate put on it but it didn't help. Not sure where to go from here...

  • Hi tashaxj. Did your Dr examine you to find that this was the cause? I can so understand your frustration with the bleeding and wanting to know for sure what is the cause as I am in same position after my lletz procedure at begining of this year. Everything's changed with me and my bleeding and Dr's are not too concerned until I have had my follow up smear which I am due to have on 19th. I think if your gp has looked in tk this and found that it's nothing to worrh about then try not to worry. Have you asked about anything you can have done to stop it from happening and have you been back about the silver nitrate not working. I would definitely call them back up and speak to them just so your not driving your self with worry I seem to do this alot and it always helps after speaking to the gp.

  • Hey Tashaxj,

I had my LLETZ done in August of this year and have been sexually active since with no problems. My partner and I had sex about a week ago and ever since I have had old blood and now fresh blood. I am on the mini pill and so I don't get a period and I was wondering if this could be the cause with me. I'm due a smear soon so I might just call the docs and see if they can bring it forward for peace of mind.

  • Hi! I still get bleeding after intercourse, not every time so I think it depends if it aggravates my scaring as mine just will not ever heal! I tried to bring my smear forward which they wouldnt do but they did send me to colposcopy which said it was just the scarring. My next smear came back 12 weeks later as there was a backlog and that said everything was fine. I was on the mini pill but now on the combined. Good luck with everything, I just find it a constant worry!

  • Hi! No I haven't been back since my normal smear. It's something that is on the list of to do! Yep always worrying! Hope your smear was ok and came back clear!

  • Hi,

sorry I know it's been ages since you replied but I just came on here to look for advice. I had the LLETZ 2 years ago and bled for the first time after intercourse a few days ago. I didn't feel pain and it went away the same day but have since tried again, bled again and feel an almost cramping in my cervix. The doctors have said I'm not due for my next follow up smear until next year. How did you get on with what you were experiencing? How did you get checked out, I'm wondering what kind of exam I can have if they're unwilling to pull my smear date forward.
    any advice is appreciated!
    thanks

  • What was your outcome. I'm in the exact same situation.

  • Hi there, just came across this and wanted to share - this happened to me after leep procedure and lasted for 3 years. GP kept prescribing antibiotics for an infection but it never helped. I eventually was so stressed I went to a private doctor who said the scarring needed to be cauterised with silver iodine. Once he did that I have not had a single issue since (now 3 years on from that). Worth inquiring about!
