Operation in a few hours to remove lower left lobe of lung

writing this whilst unable to sleep, not surprising as I have my operation in a few hours to remove the lower left lobe of my lung

  • Hello there,

You will be having your operation now and I’m wishing you all the best and thinking of you.

I am waiting to find out this evening from my doctor if I can have the same operation ( except mine would be the upper left lobe)

    Good luck with everything.

  • Hi, hoping everything has gone well for you today. I’m having my lower left lobe removed on Tuesday....

  • Hello Maurs, anotherspring and RLP

I'm sorry to read your news and I know from experience that you all must worried sick but you WILL be all right.  I had the upper left lobe of my lung removed on Valentine's Day 2017 (I can think of nicer gifts).  Yes, it is painful at first but oromorph is a little wonder drug and helps you sleep most, if not all, of the night in hospital.  I felt more comfortable not wearing a bra until after the stitches came out and wore loose clothing and slept (almost) upright in the recliner chair for the first few nights at home.  One word of advice, about a week afterwards I had quite a bad pain in my stomach and found out from the hospital afterwards that it was trapped wind from the air that they "pump in" during the operation.  So if you do get that, I found that plenty of hot drinks help ease it.  Also I was petrified to sneeze in case it caused pain but I found that the breathing in just before a sneeze was more uncomfortable (not painful) than the actual sneeze.  I hope that this is of some help to you all.  Do let us know how you got on when you feel up to it.  I wish you all the very best.

  • Thanks for sharing your advice and experience Carol. How are you doing now nearly 3years on?

    Best wishes

    Ruth

  • Hi Carol,

Thank you so much for the reassurance and tips!

I haven’t got a recliner chair but I know I can borrow one so I’ll do that.

I will let you know how it all goes and hope you are well.

    Best wishes

  • Not too bad at all thanks.  I can't walk as fast as I could as I get a bit short of breath but a short rest and I'm off again, but perhaps a bit slower.  But apart from that, no problems (fingers crossed).

Best of luck on Tuesday, Ruth, I'll be thinking of you and wishing you well.

    Take care.

  • Hello Joy

I found the recliner useful, for the first few days at least, as I wasn't lying flat so my stitches weren't "pulling" as much.  For the same reason, I used to sleep in hospital with the head of the bed raised.

I'll be thinking of you Joy and wishing you well.  Good luck.

    Take care.

  • Good afternoon

my surgery went well, it was done by keyhole.

came home yesterday, must say I never enjoyed the rush hour but was worth it ones I was back in my own house with my own bed. Had a reasonable nights sleep (keep taking the painkillers) I say.

good to have people waiting on me. Will milk this for some time to come.

    wishing you all well

  • Hi Maurs,

So pleased it went well for you and I hope the recovery is straightforward. Great to be waited on! I’m already getting far too used to that!
