Barrett's Oesophagus

After two gastroscopies I was diaganosed with Barrett's Oesophagus with High Grade Dysplasia on 22nd July. A CT scan was then carried out to rule out cancer in other organs.  This all happened very quickly. The MDT team at my local hospital recommended RFA at their feeder hospital but at my request I was referred me to a hospital out of area.

Last week I finally had an appointment at the out of area hospital where a further gastroscopy was carried out.  On completion I was advised that this hospital recommended EMR.

I am now awaiting the histology the report from the biopsies taken last week.

Can anyone advise me what the timeline should be for treatment.

  • Hi Sparkie,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read what you're going through at the moment. Unfortunately I'm unable to advise on this. In these situations it's always best to discuss next steps with your doctor, as it will be specific to you rather than more general.

However if you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi I  have long segment barretts.in September two years ago I had a surveillance endoscopy which confirmed long segment Barretts and a small nodule.in November I had another endoscopy which confirmed  this nodule was cancerous(adenocarcinoma).things moved pretty quickly after this and I then had a ct scan to see if the cancer had  spread which luckily it hadnt.then I was scheduled for an emr at the end of december.but the nodule wasn't visible at this time and may have been removed by all the biopsies taken of it.however at the next meeting it was decided that I would still have an emr in february to remove a deeper section of tissue to make sure all the nodule had been removed.I wasn't seen for eight months after this and biopsies showed I had a lot of high grade dysplasia.I have now had three sessions of halo ultra (rfa) and one argon plasma coagulation with another one due in a couple of months.hope this helps give you an idea of possible timelines.although every hospital is different.I hope everything works out well for you.

  • Hi James,

Thank you for sharing your experience.  It sounds as though the medical profession moved very quickly when you were first diagnosed and are closely monitoring you on an ongoing basis.  Have you found the treatment onerous?  Did you have a hiatus hernia?

I have today been advised that I should get a phone call tomorrow to discuss a treatment plan.  To date none of the biopsies taken have proved to be cancerous, for which I am very grateful, but I seem unable to establish how urgent treatment for High Grade Dysplasia is.

I wish you well for the future - please keep me updated on your progress.

    Kind regards

    Sparkie

  • Hi sparkie

Yes I do have a hiatus hernia and I'm now on hi dose ppi 40mg esomeprazole twice a day.i feel so lucky that the cancer was caught early.you can never guarantee that it wont come back but so far so good.most people with barrett's never progress to cancer but in my opinion high grade dysplasia is quite an urgent thing to be removed.i was told that the progression is barrett's then low grade dysplasia then high grade  dysplasia and possibly cancer.if you have an emr then you will probably have some rfa treatment as well unless you're dysplasia is very small.the bonus with rfa is that it removes the barrett's along with any dysplasia. Have you been told if you're barrett's is short segment or long.on a positive note you're dysplasia has been  found early and should be able to be treated successfully.

  • Hi James,

I'm incredibly lucky.  The Barratt's was only found because of investigtions for a 5cm paraoesophageal hiatus hernia.  The Barratt's measures C0 & M1 on the Prague scale, (confirmed by 3 different gastroscopies) the smallest measurement possible.

Did you have surgery on your hiatus hernia?

    Kind regards

    Sparkie

  • Hi sparkie

No surgery for me.im told it's a last resort and I haven't  been  offered the option of surgery anyway.let me know how you get on.

    Best wishes james

  • Hi.  I know I'm 2 years late but how long had you been having symptoms before you were diagnosed ?

  • Hi All. I've just been diagnosed with Barrett's, had biopsies & awaiting results. Does anybody know how long the results take from biopsies? The last biopsy I had on a different part of body was never fed back to me & when I 'chased' the hospital I was told I had 'unusual benign tumour'. My mother was also not told by the hospital she had lung cancer so I do worry a little. Although believe that Barrett's is not harmful & actually is quite common ? I also have hiatus hernia found at same time. Any advice welcome

  • Hi Kez 21. How did you get on? I was told in 2016 I have Barrett’s then in 2018 at a surveillance endoscopy results showed no Barrett’s. I have since found out they could have taken it from a different ‘area’ so chances are I still have Barrett’s. Am now trying to get another endoscopy sorted as it’s 5 years since my last one and I’m really anxious. I also have an hiatus hernia. To be honest Barrett’s isn’t that common apparently and you should certainly make sure you ask about how often you should get an endoscopy done. With the way things are at the minute I think it’s up to us to keep on top of things as regards testing. Do hope you had good news.
