Diagnosed breast cancer but feeling OK - am I odd?

Hello,

Initial diagnosis just RHS breast at stage 2 but grade 3 so having chemo pre surgery, 1st EC on 29th August, awaiting CT, bone scan & biopsy on LHS, results due 21st August.  Had really quick & excellent treatment compared to many plus am a stoic/daft Yorkshire lass who is ready for an adventure (although I can think of better ones!!)

Been looking at the forums more so for practical advice re what to expect re chemo, what I should be doing re diet, questions to ask the cancer team who are supporting me.

Told all family & close friends and set up a whatsapp group so they know what I am doing, so far enjoying this as it’s an opportunity for all to be entertained as well as not having to have the same bl00dy conversation over & over. Definitely decided against face book as they're not close & I know it would be filled with motivational quotes - not what I am after at all.

Hopefully there are some other people out there who are feeling relatively positive, in the meantime am off to Edinburgh fringe this weekend to watch some very odd shows - whoop, whoop!

  • Hi Sam

Yea still on 7 down 8 remaining.  I support idea of celebrating with friends yes its worthy it Sam, this journey is not easy when when such time like this comes our way why not give it good cheer? Iam planing same same thing a good cheer with sisters and brother The Lord gave me,people who have been there for me all through wanna give a shout of joy!!!

I used to live in London but 2017 moved to Walsall ,15-30 minutes train from city of Birmingham, I love area ,lots of black minority, we help each other so its amazing.

At same time I don't blame Adrian for being a vegetarian, sometimes it's good because all these meet, chickens hmmm are not really doing good in body , all chemicals being transferred to our bodies. Does he eat fish at all? I love fish, mackerel & salmon, i miss market now because that where it's cheaper, big salmon around 30 which is great deal, i still have some i bought before lock down.

I decided to go to friend tomorrow, am so kinda lazy today, need a rest and watch what I like for such times are not easily on path, when I come from hospital am tired really.

    Have a wonderful weekend

    Regards to Adrian

By my reckoning (and dodgy maths) I believe you should have finished your rads today....congrats!!  I hope you took a moment to celebrate the end of your (short term?) treatments, I hope this is it for you or do you have to, like me, have hormone (or other) stuff for a number of years?

Anyway well done, I hope you're feeling ok, though I know from experience that the skin was fine & dandy at the end of the rads and its after it got red & sore, still manageable but needed good care & attention. Also hope your not feeling too tired...it will get better.  And you've ended on the hottest day of the year...not a good combination when trying to cool down eh?  Hope you've got some aloe Vera on hand...

My skin is fully recovered now though still have some discomfort below the armpit that I'm hoping will clear off soon.  Other than that am fighting fit (as long as I don't overdo it!) and am planning a return to work following next week's new (and the start of the final) treatment which is good.

I am so looking forward to getting back up north and hope that these lockdown restrictions being eased works so I can do just that & see my northern pals.

So when do you get your daughter back from Liverpool?  Bet she'll be super glad to see her Mum eh? Think you'll be quite happy too!!

  • Hi Sam

Sadly just see this email now as I relax on my coach.glad you are recovering very well and that all is fine, preparing to go back to figure(wor-accounting) am glad it's very good sign that no more forge, isn't Sam.

Am ver well although skin is darker & spotty but otherwise doing really well, yes I was supper tired and still but knowing that i have to do all by myself them no choice but do it,the more i do is the more i get strength so yea am glad.

My lAngel came back last Saturday, glad to see her back, i did appreciate such people who cares that 3 good weeks away and do it all for her, that was incredible. Sometimes you run short of words and i leave it in Gods hands the Rewarder of all things.

As for me hopefully will go back to work from 1 st Aug, got anletter that furlough is up to 31st,July, mmmm no ready am did love staying home, doing all i could at any time. Iam thinking maybe i should switch to day time than nights which make me absolutely tired.

How is Adrian? My regards for me.

Enjoy your day and God bless

Hope you're feeling even better now, I know I am.  Had my first bisphosphonate infusion last week and felt pants for a couple of days then got progressively better so am now back to where I was early last week, which is good.

Are you finished on the treatment side? hope so.

Even got out for a much needed haircut yesterday, thankfully as those new curls and very grey (natural colour unfortunately) hair was driving me bonkers...as well as looking bonkers!  Much better now with short back & sides.  How's yours?

So am back at work next week.  Looking forward to catching up with everyone, not sure on the actual work front though!! Your return date 1st August is still some way off, make the most of it.

I've also been organising my "holiday" later in July, I was due to be seeing a pal in Southern Ireland but as they still have quarantine will be delaying that visit till later in the year so am going home to Yorkshire (yay!) to see pals & family in a ram packed week of visits, I'll struggle to be socially distanced though as will want to give them all hoooge hugs...

Its the daft Adrian & my 17th "anniversary" today...nothing short of a bl00dy miracle! We're off out to some RHS gardens and a BBQ at a pals tomorrow to celebrate/commiserate...

Hope you're feeling super good Nel and have been able to do lots of lovely stuff as well.

  • Hi Sam

You are the best friend, love you so much, how I wish one day we come to meet up,and give each other a real hug, survivors.

Also congratulations to you and Adrian, you guys am so impressed, this is awesome.  Hope it did go well, what specials did you have or do?

Yes like you said it's a miracle, yes it has to, we don't need and cant find a perfect man/woman but as long as you get on well in some things that's wonderful.

Hope you are now back to work?  Am still on furlough but finishing this month,my doctors says if I need more time to rest they will give me sick note until I feel like going back which is good, I can start in October ,am doing driving lessons which needs time as well so mmmm cant miss a chance.

Yes I finished on 24th of June, was very very tired that couldn't do much, ah was bad but now returning to normal, although burns are still but coming off, it even went to to upper shoulder and side of neck, I have to wear something with collar otherwise will draw people attention.  I thank God, He is amazing, am very very well, back to normal, looking healthier & fresh than before, when I look at pictures now and look during chemotherapy and after surgery, ah I see miracle. God is good. I went for CT scan on 6th July & smear tests all came out clear,ah my peace, freedom is restored .

I have appointment to discuss about reconstruction on 20th October, want just some muscle on chest so can wear nice ones. I followed Brenda, loose women lady, how glowing she looks, how amazing her chest looks after mastectomy, its encouraging that it's all possible.

What your plan concerning reconstruction? My boobs were big, 36D size so I don't know how they do it but need one.

All the best at work Sam, no dog in brain anymore so ah will do figure well.

My best regards and congratulations to Adrian.

    God bless you

  • Hiya Nel

Afraid any hugs will have to wait until the world is not so full of madness but yes, do love a good bear hug...even though its now a slightly lopsided one with just the one boob!

It was nice to celebrate our 'anniversary' by seeing others...ha! Lovely to see my pal & hubby (went to uni with them) and her 3 offspring (who have far too much energy...12 & 2 x 14 yr olds) and then a lovely BBQ waited on hand & foot...a lovely weekend indeed. And I've just got back from a great week in Yorkshire seeing my pals and family up there, out to restaurants (seems really odd not having done it for so long) and trips to seaside and lovely countryside, it was quite sad to have to travel back down south but there was Adrian & cats at the other end to greet me.

I am back at work, well I was for a short week before last week's holiday - I am taking it easy, as I hope you are. I'm only working part time but was really tired after my first week so we'll see how I get on.  Get you doing driving lessons, I did mine when much younger but only passed on my 3rd attempt! There was far too much coordination required...hope you fare better than me.  Should we be warning the car users of Birmingham?? Ha!

Gosh you had radiotherapy high up didn't you?  Mine only got as far as shoulder blade.  So like me you're as free of cancer as you possibly can be - well done & quite right! Congratulations Nel.

How's your hair then?  Am so glad that the hair got coloured and cut.

Yep, I've also started the reconstruction journey, DIEP is my only option, which is fine, and am looking to see which plastic surgeon I'll have an initial consultation with, though am lucky am near very good places.  I'm a similar size chest to you but want smaller ones as they just get in the way (how ladies with G/H cups cope I have no idea!) so small recon and reduction on remaining boob I reckon.  The only problem we have is that waiting lists are even worse as CV19 has held lots of them up so I hope you're not in a rush, its good you've already got a date though, and time will fly anyway.  Have you managed to get a prosthesis yet?  Must chase my hospital as fitting appointments may have restarted...hope so.

So its school holidays eh?  Suspect for most the only difference from the preceding 3 months is no home schooling...hope you have some nice day trips planned for you & mini-you.

Ha! Adrian needs congratulations for lasting that long and not murdering me (I deserve at least a medal).

Enjoy the rest of your time off and don't forget to take it easy ( as I do!).

Hi, just checking in how you're doing.

How are those driving lessons going?  I know they've now restarted as some of my friends kids are having them (thankfully up north so am not on the road with the loons that I know they are!).

Hope you're more or less back to 'normal' by now, I know I am, I can get quite tired at times but that's about it really.  And some of that may be due to the fact that I've been exercising too much...can't help myself...managed, by accident (as got lost!), a 33 mile bike ride the other day - I was soooo knackered afterwards, my poor little legs!

Although I had to wait 3 and half weeks and chase my annual mammogram came back all clear, as I knew it would, so that's good.

Also had my first appointment with plastic surgeon re DIEP reconstruction and am hopeful can get it done early Dec, which will be great, am so lucky to have medical insurance through work.  I do hope you Oct appointment gives you a good timescale too as know that there's lots of catching up surgery being done currently so they may be back on course by end of year and can squeeze you in eh?  Fingers crossed.

So mini Nel will be going back to school this or next week I guess, hope that's good for everyone and that she's looking forward to it, she must miss her pals.

Had probably the last BBQ of the year ( looking at the weather) last night and far too many glasses of white wine...lovely!!

    Hope you're both well.

  • Hi Sam

Thank you so much my good pal for checking on us, ah what a good friend you are, honestly I have been thinking to write you but before I start something comes in until I forgot, mmmm.

Good news to hear the mammogram came normal  what a liberty and also Diep on way hoooley cant wait feeling like a woman again , I don't know if this happens only to me? Sometimes when I shower in my mind I have 2 normal boobs until I touch washing myself is when I feel empty then updates the mind ah ok. Life can drastically change eiishi.

Little me had a 5th birthday yesterday, it was so so grate with more fun, LOL Surprise cake, was amazing. All was in the church, lots of money and some clothes and dolls, she is so happy. Yes school is reopening this Thursday starting year 1. No more sleeping head ha ha ha 7am we are awake.

Am also resuming work this week, 6 months home, it's a long time how I wish can stay more lol but I have to, all process of returning to work is done, Covid test done so just waiting for rota.

I had to stay more because, I could feel numbing from hand to leg so had to wait to get better which now am , don't feel it any more.

    My best regards to Adrian,

    God bless and talk soon

Hugs& kisses from me & Ang

  • Hi Nel

Its so long since I wrote to you, far too busy with bothersome work I'm afraid although it is good that we're both having more 'normality' in our lives as time progresses eh?

Glad, all be it ages ago, that your daughter had a good 5th, what an age to be...I can't recall being younger than 16, always had a rubbish memory.  I hope she's enjoying being back at school though it may be half term where you are?

How is being back at work for you?  Hope you're still looking after yourself, I seem to recall you ran before the cancer nonsense...is that a thing again?  I've been enjoying the gym and cycling (well falling off and wading through mud amongst other amusing cycling related incidents), a good reason to get out of the house and take in some lovely nature (less so now its getting dark early).

So hope you're feeling great and are ok with cv19, I'm doing a cracking job of avoiding idiots so far!

My DIEP is now confirmed 8th Dec, in London (they couldn't do locally unless at very short notice) so that's the next excitement...poor Adrian gets to do my housework again...hurrah!

Let me know how you are.

  • Happy New Year Sam

I mean being in relationship is good if you are compatible atleast you chat, eat Nd be together when it meant to but if these things are not present why should I bother?

    Ah

Anyway I wish you all goody goodies in this year, long and healthy life, no that name anymore.

    My regards to Adrian
