Diagnosed breast cancer but feeling OK - am I odd?

Hello,

Initial diagnosis just RHS breast at stage 2 but grade 3 so having chemo pre surgery, 1st EC on 29th August, awaiting CT, bone scan & biopsy on LHS, results due 21st August.  Had really quick & excellent treatment compared to many plus am a stoic/daft Yorkshire lass who is ready for an adventure (although I can think of better ones!!)

Been looking at the forums more so for practical advice re what to expect re chemo, what I should be doing re diet, questions to ask the cancer team who are supporting me.

Told all family & close friends and set up a whatsapp group so they know what I am doing, so far enjoying this as it’s an opportunity for all to be entertained as well as not having to have the same bl00dy conversation over & over. Definitely decided against face book as they're not close & I know it would be filled with motivational quotes - not what I am after at all.

Hopefully there are some other people out there who are feeling relatively positive, in the meantime am off to Edinburgh fringe this weekend to watch some very odd shows - whoop, whoop!

  • Found your regime...AC then taxol.  Will never get a job as a researcher or detective!

Thanks but very little suffering here, especially compared to some ( my support network are probably experiencing the greater suffering as have more time on my hands to annoy them and for them to be guilted into coming to see "poor little" me...on yes I can too lay it on when needed, you're not alone, and do find that sulking is very effective with the boyfriend...am such a child, but an effective one).

Sounds like you've been given a bit of a run around by all accounts! So where are you at now?  Have you had all the tests now, do hope so.

Steroids & Horice doesn't sound like the ideal combination at all...but I'm all for being a grot bag & lets face it there's a lot of idiots around nowadays...and as someone who is practically perfect my opinion counts for LOTS!!

Hope the 2 previously mentioned monsters impacts have subsided and your weekend is a good one.

  • Since the diagnoses they have been putting me through every scan and test I can imagine.. which has been great but at the moment I am living life around appointment letters coming through the post haha massive shift! Also found something wrong with my thyroid but I'm not surprised about that - mum had issues too

Yeah, I am also having the injections.. I finished the last one yesterday and now I feel much better .. apart from some lower back pain which.. since about an hour ago has diminished.
looking forward to being back at work next week for a few days.. I have an appointment booked for a port to be put in also .. but yes I get to work from home when I need to which is great, it will encourage me to work as much through during the chemo I think.. mainly just so I can avoid the germs during the winter months as much as possible.

I think I may have missed this, but how long are you into your chemo?

    keep strong and keep shining

  • Having a t shirt printed -" Menopausal and on steroids - you have been warned", if that doesn't keep the idiots at bay I'll have "plus got cancer" on the back...

Latest is I now have an appointment on Tuesday with surgeon, no mention of bronchoscopy so fingers crossed they've made a decision, all the tests were done so quickly, within 4 weeks I'd had them all then it's been quiet for 3 weeks. Don't even know what they found with the lymph nodes that seems to have held things up. Not looking forward to treatment but really would like to know what's happening now!

I know I'm going to be an awful patient so lord help the family

Long may we be around annoying people, my favourite pass time even before the C xxx

Update - I was wrong, appointment was just to tell me I needed the bronchoscopy, a rigid one where they cut into the neck??? Sooo going to be another few weeks for treatment plan, if it's spread to the lymph nodes it's chemo, other than that I still don't know much xxx

Yes, it is an interesting way to live your life for a while going from one hospital appointment to another isn't it?  I however took mine as an opportunity to entertain all (whether they wanted it or not) and also found out, how, for example, use contactless on a bus (am a car driver, in surrey who is not au fait with bus travel...sad I know), who knew you could go little or far for the same ££...because am sad now want to know what's the greatest distance I could go around here.

The only thing I know about thyroids is that alot of my past cats seem to have health issues in that respect. And the challenges resulted in ongoing large vets bills...never quite sure whether these vets are expensive drug pushers or not.

Not sure if your injections are pre-measured and "all" you do is inject & plunge but always struggle to remove the cap (over needle) in a well thought out manner, resulting in me dismantling the bloody thing on Monday and spraying the cat & me with gunk...am not sure that one will help my well being after all.

Glad your work are being good, I do think its in their best interest, that however doesn't stop some employers from being absolute *** though! Am off into the office tomorrow, it will be nice to speak to people face to face during the day and a good opportunity to annoy others (one of my key skills) and will, sadly, make a nice change from in depth discussions with cats.

Am 3 chemo's into treatment with another 1 of EC to go then 4 of paclitaxel, due to finish chemo 2nd Jan.  This week is the wobbly/pathetic/numb-ish feeling week, not terrible by any means but would rather be feeling fine as hope to be next week, as a strong hardy northener all this feeling below par is just not acceptable!  And I really want to go for a muddy bike ride!

I had my flu jab (its recommended if you're on chemo) last Friday which has probably not helped being a lethargic lump this week.

Strength will return (later this week I hope) and the shining is always there thanks to my inherited fathers oily skin (acne as a teen but few wrinkles now..ha!).

Main issue for today...can I be bothered to get dressed & have a shower???  Decisions, decisions...

Hope you have a good week in between many hospital visits.

    Sam X

  • Kez,

Love it!  Think the fierce attitude will hold you in good stead and sort out eejits too...and who could ask for more eh?

Sorry your appointment yesterday wasn't more useful re treatment clarification, its does seem to be taking some time doesn't it?  Is this normal for lung related cancer?  Presumably you now have a date for the bronx and that's the last test?  Hope so, as they must have done every other test/scan by now?

On the plus side (??) I now know what a bronchoscopy is, am sorry to say but always get visions of bucking bronco game...not too many similarities strangely.

For me I need to know what the future holds, the lack of ability to plan is the real killer!

I'm annoying generally ( I have medals) so think am actually a delightful patient, that is if one enjoys being talked at incessantly and being an ongoing source of entertainment/having the *** taken out of them quite frequently.

As you can see from reply to Jodie am in the week post chemo which is just a little bit ***, apart from it isn't as at this time of my cycle have constipation...I do however know that the dulcoease will due its magic in the next few days, something to look forward to (ha!!!).

Got a mad friend coming over from Ireland tomorrow who is threatening to clean house & make casseroles...god help me, the latter could really finish me off.

Right really need to get *** in gear and think about bathing, working, cleaning or maybe not just yet...

    Keep well

    Sam X

  • Hi Sam

Hope you've had a good time with your mad Irish friend x

Yep it's been a month since they decided the pet scan had changed the course of the treatment plan and I needed the bronchoscopy/mediastinoscopy (can't say it let alone spell it!) which is now booked for Friday. (I'm telling people I'm going to have my throat cut )  Like you the ability not to be able to plan anything at the moment or know if I can do things already planned is getting a tad frustrating and the symptoms are now getting on my wick! It's another two weeks for results so at this point I'm thinking why did I cancel my New York trip so it didn't delay treatment!

Anyway keep smiling and keep winding folk up, always a good source of fun x

    Take care

Just a quickie to say hope your sweeney Todd experience tomorrow goes well and isn't too challenging. And hope you get the results in a timely fashion!

Had a great time with my daft pal, went to beachy head for a very bracing (short) walk, beautiful scenery accompanied by lots of guffawing. And nobody got pushed off or chose to dive off the edge which was nice!

Last week has been my good week so been very productive work wise ( brain was firing on all cylinders) and also got to gym & out for a bike ride between rain showers.

Rest assured if you hadn't cancelled the NY trip it would have coincided with an important appointment that couldn't be rescheduled...that's life!

Got last round of current drain cleaner next week then move onto 4 lots of cillit bang, not sure if Barry Scott will replace the lovely nurse Jennifer on the chemo ward, time will tell.  And my hair may start growing back under Barry's regime which will be interesting, I'd quite like it to come back platinum blonde grey which my mother has, much better than the current salt & pepper grey and would mean I could save a fortune colouring it (as am doing currently...every cloud eh?).

I do hope you're ok after Friday and are recuperating well.

  • Hi Sam

Survived Sweeney Todd, had to stay in though because it was late when they finally did it - total torture not being able to have a cuppa all day! Home now and just rather tender but no sore throat so hopefully be ok in a couple of days - just the waiting again now for results! With you on the hair colouring, mines needed dying for a while now but thought I'd wait to see if I'd be keeping it, don't think I can wait any not longer so might put a nice blue one until I know :-) not so worried about loosing it, I had it shaved off for charity last year (the irony makes me laugh)....

Good luck with drain cleaner next week x
