Mums diagnosis

Hi everyone, I’ve read so much on here but never spoke, my mum went to the doctor one day and the next was told she has cancer, tumours peritoneal, ovarian, pelvis & bottom of spleen, we were told not curable, as you can imagine devastation for us all so quickly but after biopsy We’ve been told high grade serous cancer, operation isn’t an option, however we went to our first appointment with gynaecologist today and she’s being admitted to get drained and start chemo this week. I’m thinking if there is chemo there is hope .. anyone have any similar situations? Thanks in adavance xx

  • Hi A2904,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm sorry to read about your mum. This must be incredibly hard. If you have any medical questions or concerns make sure you write them all down so that you're able to discuss anything with your mum's doctor or medical team, to help you have as much information as possible and also to help support your mum.

Our nurses are also available should you wish to discuss anything with them - you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

I can certainly understand how devastating this must be for all of you, and I just want to wish you all the best for this time for all of you.

I hope you find this forum useful and do feel free to check back in whenever you'd like to, and also to explore this forum for any others going through something similar.

    Hi 2904,

Welcome to our forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that has brought you here.

I hate to say this , but if the consultant has told you that your mum's cancer is not curable and, that it is a high grade cancer, there is not likely to be much betterment. Chemo is usually given at this stage to try and reduce the size of the tumours and, buy a little extra time.

I am glad to hear that she has already been admitted and is getting drained prior to starting chemo this week.

One good thing is that they are not wasting any time in dealing with this. I lost my mum to breast cancer which had spread to her brain, bones, liver and lungs. She was in a similar position to your mum, although they didn't give chemo back then and, it was heartrending to watch on and not be able to do anything to help her. Just be there for your mum and attend to her day to day needs, talk to her and don't leave anything left unsaid. If you want to know her prognosis, I'm sure that her doctor will be able to tell you.

I also lost my father-in-law this year. He was admitted to hospital for tests. We were told that afternoon that he had cancer which had spread throughout his body. Five days later he passed away. I am all too familiar with the devastation you face and, I hope that you have a supportive family to help you through this difficult time.

You have a hard road ahead of you and I hope that you find the strength to see it through. One thing that will make a huge difference to your mum is for family and friends to keep a positive attitude around her.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Thinking of you all.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
