I didn’t realise I even had breasts until now...

Hi all,

So, as a man, I have never had my breasts commented on until 2 weeks ago when my GP told me he’d like to make an urgent referral to a breast clinic to have them rule out anything sinister.

I’d been sat in work listening to my boss drone on when I noticed a pain in my chest (or breast, as it’s now being talked about!). Had a look in the evening and saw a redness and swelling. It all felt a bit sore and unusual so went to GP the next day like the modern man I am. He took one look and said ‘mastits - men can get that too - you’ve an infection’ Gave me antibiotics and said come back in one week. I went back in one week. He said ‘I think it’s better but I want to rule out cancer so I’m going to refer you to a clinic’

One week on, my appointment is tomorrow. I’m guessing it’s all alright and they’re just being safe.  I’m a 38 year old who didn’t even realise he had breasts until a week ago.

Could somebody tell me it’s all going to be alright please?  Excuse the flippancy, it probably sounds like I’m taking the *** but I’m not really. Kind of scary.

  • Hi Barny. It's always scary being put on a cancer referral, but your GP is just making sure. Statistically, 9 out of 10 of "cancer" referrals turn out not to be cancer at all, and your breast has responded to the antibiotic so the odds are very much in your favour.

Nevertheless, you will no doubt be put through a series of tests and scans, just to be sure.  It's pretty much standard that everyone who ever gets referred gets treated the same way, so don't panic when you get these follow on tests and scans.

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply Telemando.

Yes, I really feel like I’m probably just one of the many thousands whose story doesn’t even really get started on here.

Its funny - you almost feel bad posting your worries, knowing that that are so many who are actually living your worst thoughts.

I suppose Google is what it is.  It scares you learning what could be, yet comforts you knowing there are others out there.

    Or something...x

  • We definitely advise against Googling one's symptoms, because it inevitably leads to the worst case scenario.  Last time I Googled my symptoms, it told me I needed a hysterectomy - and I'm a bloke :)

You don't need to feel guilty that there are others worse off than you because everybody helps everybody here, and your fears are no less valid than anyone else's.  And when (as we all hope and expect) this proves to be a false alarm, then we'll all be pleased for you, and pleased if we helped you a little bit along the way.

So, don't be afraid to post, and keep us up to date with all developments.
