Biopsy and Travel Plans

Hi! I was told yesterday that I, in all likelihood, have prostate cancer. I had a consultation after a year or so of PSA levels being around 5, then 6, then 7, and then most recently back to 6. I have had recently been having other symptoms relating to aches in and around testicles and pelvic area and problems of urinary nature. A DRE yesterday revealed a ‘tense’ prostate on one side. The consultant was of the opinion it was indicating cancer which a biopsy would confirm. I informed the consultant that I had holiday planned and he was agreeable to performing a biopsy when I return in 4 weeks. I left the consultation but have started worrying greatly about my decision. Will any possible cancers spread in that timeframe? I have aches in my back occasionally and constipation sometimes; both of which I never mentioned. I am also suffering from indigestion brought about by GERD.

  • Hi caputh, welcome to the forum sometimes different foods can change your psa but as you say it is low, have you had any scans yet. You should be OK for holiday I've a couple of friends ill ask to get in touch, [@woodworm]‍ & [@telemando]‍ they'll be more help than me my psa is a lot higher than yours,.. Good luck with holiday.

  • Hi Caputh,

Most cancers are slow growing and if your PSA hasnt changed that much during the year it is likely to be slow growing. I am not a doctor but have read a lot about prostate cancer.

It should be very treatable should it be confirmed.

My psa was 70 and after treatment dropped down to 0.01 so a very good result.

My advice is to enjoy your holidat as much as you can.

Please keep in contact and let us know how you get on, Brian

  • Hi Billygoat! Thanks for the message of support. Yes, my PSA levels are not too high. I was surprised when being informed. I was aware the DRE was a bit different to the one I had before a colonoscopy in December (for another matter). I thought going in to the consultation that another cause would be discovered; enlarged prostate or prostatitis. However, he was pretty sure it was cancer. In my shock lots of questions I should have asked escaped me. Now I am worrying and it is very difficult to follow up through the normal channels.

  • Hi Brian! Thanks for your reassurance. I am trying to keep calm and rational about it all. It is difficult. My BP yesterday was pretty high when measured! I am due to leave on Thursday for France then some walking in Galicia. I have travel insurance and they are aware of yesterday’s appointment. I now have the dilemma of either choosing to not bother to update them (after all it has not been diagnosed yet), or informing them and finding the Premium has rocketed! Have you any experience in this?

    Michael

  • Hi Michael,

I have no experiance of travel insurance. But as you say, It hasnt been diagnosed yet and may not turn out to be cancer. Myself I would not say anything especially as it is unlikely to cause a problem in the short term.

I know it is difficult to keep calm for the not knowing make the mind work overtime and nearly always assumes the worst. Going by my own eperiance, I felt a lot better when it was diagnosed believe it or not. And even better when treatment started for you feel you are fighting back. For you then know what your dealing with rather than the uncertainty that you have at the moment.

Any questions please ask away. Enjoy your trip, Brian

  • Hi if you have any questions most people on here will have answers remember we're not medical just found out with experience,

  • Hi Caputh.

I went through the prostate cancer mill in 2010 (nearly 10 years! How time flies!). My PSA was about 5.6, my Gleason score was 3+4, and I had a radical prostatectomy (RP). Since then, my PSA has been < 0.1 - which is what we all want after an RP.

I'm not a doctor but I picked up quite a lot of information along the way.  I think if your PSA is under 10, then the chance of it having spread already, or spreading in the next few months, is very low indeed.  If your consultant was worried then he would have insisted on an immediate biopsy and told you to cancel your holiday.

Let me also reassure you that there IS life after prostate cancer.  Too many people think that a cancer diagnosis is the end of the world, but treatments are progressing all the time.  With your low PSA reading, if it is cancer then it is almost certainly going to be early stage, low to medium aggressive, and curable.

That isn't to say that you're not in for a bit of a rocky road, but you can get through this and come out the other side.  There will be hard decisions to make, and no doubt a lot of worries and tears along the way, but do not give up hope.

  • Thank you so much Telemundo for your words of reassurance. I will keep them in mind.
