CT scan now called for an endoscopy

My husband has lost a lot of weight the last 6 months, we went to our GP who basically told him he thought it was cancer and made a 2 week referral. He seen the consultant at the hospital who didn't say much but told him to have a CT scan 2 days later and she would then arrange to see him after she got the results, he had the CT scan nearly 2 weeks ago and today the hospital phoned and said the CT department have referred him for an endoscopy and he should go in 2 days time, he has not heard anything from the consultant and this appointment just came out of the blue. Is this normal? we both thought the consultant would see him after the CT scan and tell him the results but he has heard nothing , he is now saying he isn't going for the endoscopy because it is a waste of time if nothing is wrong, silly I know but I think he has had enough of waiting without any answers, he has tried to phone the GP but he is not there and no other GP is available to speak to , we are both at our wits end with worry.

  • Hi Diane, this is a horrible waiting game and I think most of us have been through the same.  What happens is that the consultant will want every piece of information in front of him then they have a meeting to decide what the outcome is, so then no one is second guessing what is wrong with him.  Then you will see the consultant who will discuss the results, tell you the full truth and decide what treatment plan is required.  So he needs the endoscopy, if his GP has voiced cancer to miss this appointment would mean the necessary information would be missing.  When cancer is mentioned most people go into full on denial mode, my husband included!  You need to be firm with him but not pushy as they then feel not in control of what's going on.  Post again if you need, there is always someone who will help you.  Best wishes, Carol

  • Thank you Carol for you kind response. I do understand they need all the information available I think my husband was expecting to see the consultant after the CT scan and find out then if they had spotted anything unusual, he has had a blood test,a chest Xray and the CT scan in the last 3 weeks and doesn't know the results of any of them and as i'm sure you are aware it just leaves the patient in limbo,I am sure he will go for the endoscopy but think it is just not knowing if they have found something worrying or have not found anything and want to do more tests to see if that shows anything.

  • Hi Diane, this is the problem, you don't know anything because they haven't got the whole picture, it's frustrating, a waiting game and only at the final consultation will you be told, we went through all the same procedure and then were told it was lung cancer, it's your life but unfortunately they have many similar cases to deal with, although we were told cancer by our GP it was not confirmed until the last bronchospoy, so we waited until it was confirmed before telling everyone.  Good luck, keep us updated if you want to.  Carol

  • Hi Diane, I know the waiting is awful. Often the CT scan does not show enough to do a diagnosis and that is why they do the endoscopy. My husband had a bronchoscopy and they did a biopsy.  We then had a phone call to go for a PET scan and after looking that up we'd made up our minds it was cancer that we were dealing with. From his 1st scan to finding out it was cancer was 3 months, his was caught early as it was an MRI scan for his heart that showed a shadow on his lung. I wish you well on your journey, please come on this site where lots of lovely people will help you.
