Hubby with elevated PSA

Hi all. I'm trying not to show my husband I am worried.  He has previously taken testosterone and his GP advised him to have a PSA test. The result has come back as 6.5 which apparently is elevated. He is 51. He had a physical examination and his GP advised the prostate felt normal but he had to have his bloods repeated. If still elevated he has to have an MRI scan and biopsy. I know nothing about prostate cancer and am worried that he may have it. There is no history in his family or anything. He has had problem with ED but they thought that was down to his diabetes. Can anyone help to relieve my worry? Thanks all

  • Hi there are a few people on here who have the same problem, have a look around. If you want to talk try (woodworm) his psa was 70 mine was a lot higher but you can check it out if you want. Good luck best wishes.have you got his gleason score.

  • Hi MelanieT. Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor, but I was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer back in 2010 when I was aged 56, and that was treated by surgery.

6.5 is higher than the accepted norm for a man of 51, but as PSA readings go, this is still a pretty low value.

Is this likely to be prostate cancer?  Well, no, it's not likely but I'm afraid it is possible. There are any number of reasons why one's PSA may be raised, with infection and/or benign prostate swelling being very high on the list of possibilities.

However, if it does turn out to be prostate cancer, then it is highly likely to be early stage and may not even need treatment. Early stage prostate cancer has a very high rate of cure.

I know it's really difficult not to worry, and cancer is a scary word, but please try not to panic over this.

  • Hi Melani

As your husbans PSA is only slightly elevated, even if it should turn out to be cancer, they should be able to manage it reasonably easily. Mine was 70 when diagnosed and ended up at 0.01, the lowest they can measure. So I hope my story will help allieviate your worries.

I also was diagnosed with diabetis at the same time.

Sending best wishes to you and your husband and please keep in contact, Brian
