Scared and looking for similar experiences

I had my first smear last week. I was pregnant when I turned 25 and had to wait three months after I gave birth. It has came back HPV positive and high grade dyskaryosis. I'm really frightened. After my first baby three years ago I went for a scan due to abnormal bleedibg and the doctor mentioned that I had womb cells growing out my cervix. He said I might need them cortarised. But i didn't hear anything back. He hadn't made it seem like a big deal. Now I'm terrified that it was actually this and I should of chased it up. I don't how scared I need to be. I'm worrying so much.

  • Hi there ...

The wait for tests and results are really scary ... unfortunately there's no easy way round the wait .. but please remember most come back o.k .. try not to Google... that's always worse case scenario. .

Fingers crossed for you .. hold on in there .. it just may be o.k ... Chrissie x

  • Hi,

    Please don't worry.

Let me stress that I am not a qualified medic.  What the doctor mentioned to you 3 years ago, womb cells growing out your cervix, it sounds like he was referring to cervical ectopy (sometimes called cervical erosion).  If it is that then he would have mentioned it just so you knew you had it, and he would have mentioned the cauterisation probably just to make you aware that if it started to bother you in the future there was something that could be done about it.  If it is cervical ectopy then it is very common and it is not in any way linked to developing cancer.  So please don't go worrying that this is what has now caused the dyskaryosis or that you could have done something differently.

Sorry about the HPV and dyskaryosis.  Thankfully you are now in the system and being checked out and helped.  Dyskaryosis does not mean you have cancer rather that you might develop it if the cells are left untreated.  You are being checked now so nothing that needs treated is going to go untreated.  I believe usually what they do is examine the cells further and remove those that are abnormal.  So please try not to worry, you really don't need to be scared, you just need to get it sorted.

Hope that helps.  Do let us know how you get on if you are happy to?

  • Thankyou so much for your advice and support. I'm really trying to not let it worry me but it's all I can think about. I have two young daughters and no family nearby and I'm just worrying constantly. I will keep you updated. I'm just waiting and hopefully I will be put at ease once I have the extra tests. Thankyou for explaining about the cervical erosion too. I feel a bit better knowing that it isn't linked.

  • So I had a colposcopy and they took a biopopsy and did LLTEZ. I'm just waiting my results. I'm still bleeding buy not particularly sore which is a good thing. I'm a little anxious but trying to not think about it until I get that letter.

  • Hi,

The advice you've received is spot on.

To put HPV into context - 80% of the population has this viral disease at some stage of their life. Jo's Trust have some good info about it www.jostrust.org.uk/.../10-myths-about-hpv

    Best wishes
