Possible mouth cancer

Hi everyone I'm a 33 year old female from Wales and at the end of November I had a huge mouth ulcer appear on the roof of my mouth 3 weeks later it hadn't healed at all so I visited my gp who had a quick look and said i needed to see a dentist. I then booked a dental appointment she took loads of pictures etc and said for me to come back In 2 weeks time. Therefore i went back last week and my ulcer is a lot better but will not heal and i just have a large red ulcer there although it's not as painful as it was. She seemed happy it looked better, took more images and asked for the head dentist to take a look as a second opinion. He immediately said I'm not happy with this, send for a biopsy as an urgent referral now. I then made the dreaded mistake of googling why he has sent me for a biopsy, and all I can find is cancer and naturally this has got me totally freaked out.i rung the hospital today to check they had the referral which they say they haven't had, so back on the phone to the dentist surgery who confirmed it's an urgent referral and they are re sending it today and they are phoning the hospital tomorrow to check they have had it. Has anyone had any experience of this? How long was the wait for the biopsy? What does the biopsy entail? What are the chances it is cancer? Sorry for all the questions but I cannot stop panicking and want to prepare myself incase it is. Thankyou for your time everyone.

  • I totally understand your worry, I was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Christmas, and all the tests and waiting for appointments screws with your head. Hopefully someone who has been through the same will reply to your thread. So in the meantime try your hardest to stay off evil dr google, he will tie you in knots....honest. Good luck and keep us posted xx

  • Thankyou marlyn, I hope your getting your appointments through quick, so that you are soon on the path to recovery xxx

  • Thank you very much, that is very reassuring news. I have no intention of searching Google for my symptoms again, it certainly made my anxiety and worry worse. But I've searched a few posts on here and they have been reassuring also and very informative, so fingers crossed. I will keep you all posted on my journey.

  • Hi Stardon,

Sorry to hear of your symptoms and just to send on good wishes.

Non of us are medically trained or offer opnions here on potential diagnosis but very often these tests are done as a check and do not automatically come back as cancerous and can be a whole range of things.

I am into 7th week post treatment for throat cancer, which is highly treatable and curable,  and in my experience biopsy normally can take 10-12 days for results to come through.

Anno the waiting is the worst part but I always advise people to stay off Google as so much mis information and sets minds racing.

Keep figures crossed its all good new and keep us posted on your journey , but ask away any questions you have meantime.

    Kind regards

  • Thankyou how long did you wait for the biopsy. It's been 10 days since my hospital received my referral and a surgeon still hasn't looked at my file meaning they wont give me an appointment until he does. I cant wait any longer, the stress and worry is making me even sicker. Is this something I can get done privately? I have zero faith in the NHS in Wales.

  • Hi there,

So the actual biopsy itself would normally take around 10 - 12 days. Slightly longer occasionaly but normally would take between 10-14 days I would say.

Getting an appointment with consultant is a different thing and can sometimes in itself a little delay depending on number of appointments going through system. If I have picked you up correctly you are waiting to have appointment with consultant at ENT and they would sort out biopsy etc.
Totally understand your anxiety and we are at the mercy of the NHS system which by and large is excellent but again delays re appointments and waiting is unfortunately something most of us experience.
Suggest you phone ENT, as I have done in past, to sort/clarify appointments and see if they can speed this up. Also let them know that if its possible, you would take a cancellation at short notice.

Anything to get you moved on in system and seen asap.

Privately, yes you can go down that route and is an option available. Its not something I have any knowledge of and have no idea of the cost or whether you are covered for private medical insurance. I would imaging private would be a little quicker although not sure by how much and again the cost implications.
Stay off google as ive said, so much misinformation and remember that so many referalls are just that and does not always meen automatic cancer and can be a whole range of things and very often biospy done just to rule anything out.
I wish you well and hope you can be seen as soon as possible but if I can help in any way, please ask away or chat away if helps at all.

    kind regards
