Tonsil cancer?

My hubby had an enlarged right tonsil. He went to gp on 4th December and was fast tracked to ENT.  Went to ENT on the 11th December where the doctor didn't know what it was.  He was told he needed tonsillectomy which took place on the 27th December.  Hubby making a good recovery.  He now has to have a ct scan on the 6th January.  Google is all doom and gloom (I know I shouldn't look at it). Anybody on here had any good news when they got their results?  Thank you for reading.

  • Hi!

I have tonsil cancer and am halfway through my treatment.

My cancer has been caused by the HPV virus and has affected two of my lymph nodes.

Obviously, I was totally freaking out to be told I have cancer but my consultant has told me that it is ''completely treatable' and that there is ''no  reason to expect anything other than a successful outcome." This type of cancer needs lots of treatment (my plan is two chemo and 30 radiotherapy over 6 weeks) and I am pretty tired. I have mucositis and find a lot of food and drink really unpalatable. After my treatment I will be unwell for up to 6 more weeks. But then I can get back to normal.

I might still have foods that I don't like and I might have a dry mouth but I will have all my hair, no operations and a normal life.

The internet, particularly American posts, is really scary. I gave that up. There are lots of great posts and good info on this site. Put tonsil cancer into the search bar and you will see a lot of helpful stuff from some amazing people - that's helped me a lot.

I hope that your husband doesn't have cancer. Fingers crossed! But you have a whole lot of support here if he does.

    Hug,

    Allie

  • Hi Allie,

    Thank you for your reply.

I am so sorry you are going through this.  You seem really positive in your post which has just made me feel better.  Good Luck with the rest of your treatment.

It's the waiting that is getting to us.  We have been told if it is cancer it is early days as the lump was 18mm.  Hopefully,  it will be benign but if it isn't at least we will know what we are dealing with.

    Thanks again for replying  xx

  • Hi Lizzie

Sorry you’re going through this and the waiting is always the worst part. Definitely stay off Dr Google as it only gives the worst case scenarios and the stats are often out of date.

My hubby was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer of the tonsils stage 3 with lymph node metastasis in December 2015. After 5 cycles of chemotherapy, 30 fractions of radiotherapy over 6 weeks and a neck dissection he has been in remission for 2 1/2 years.

If the results come back as cancer then treatment is available and often with good results. I wont say don’t worry as thats not possible I know , but we are here to answer any questions you have and offer support .

Good luck for a benign outcome and best wishes

  • Thank you Emma,

Great news about your hubby being in remission.  It must have been a worrying time for you.

They have told him if it is cancer it will be radiotherapy and chemotherapy.  The doctor has felt all his neck and couldn't find anymore lumps.  We just have to keep our fingers crossed.

    Best wishes to you too

    Xx

  • Thank you Emma that is very kind.

We got a letter today to say the scan will take 2-3 hours. That seems a very long time for a scan.?

We have an appointment to see the consultant on Monday at 10.30. Things are moving very fast now.

Feel very emotional but can't show it because of the children.  We haven't told them anything and hopefully we won't have to.

    Thank you again.

    Take care

    Xx
