Fibroadenoma

Hi all,

A little worried so thought I’d post my story.

I’m 32. December 2017, I was on holiday when I discovered a lump, the size of a grape. This lump got bigger when my period was due, & then shrunk when my period finished. It was sometimes painful. On my return from holiday, I immediately went to my GP, who referred me to the Breast clinic.

The consultant took a biopsy but concluded it was Fibroadenoma. I was asked what I wanted to do; leave it or have it removed, & I opted to leave it. 6-8 months later, it was getting bigger & more painful. I returned to my GP, who referred me again. I expressed my concerns to the consultant & elected to have it removed. I am currently 2 & 1/2 weeks post op, received news last week the Fibroadenoma was benign. However I have discovered ANOTHER (I think) Fibroadenoma, more or less in the same place as the one before. It’s about the size of a pea, very smooth, and mobile.

I’m sat here a little worried because I didn’t notice it before. Had I spotted it prior to the operation, I would have requested it to be removed.

Does anyone have any advice? I realise I cannot have it removed so soon after this operation but I’m really worrying.

Thanks.

    Hi Lilac Queen,

I am so sorry to hear about all the concerns which you've had with your breast. It is really good news that your Fibroadenoma was benign. I would have expected your surgeon to check the surrounding area for any additional lesions when he was carrying out your surgery.

Do you have an appointment to see your surgeon again soon? If not, then I would suggest that you phone your consultant's secretary and ask for advice. I am pretty sure that nothing will be done until you have healed from your recent surgery, but he may bring you in to have a look at it, which would be moe reassuring for you.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

I hope that all goes well.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi LilacQueen,

Sorry about that horrible fibroadenoma that sounds horrible.  I had them for years but mine were never painful so it was just a case of having to alter my mindset to be able to live with them and not worry about breast cancer (my mum had breast cancer young).

Like Jolamine I think they would have searched the area at the time so presumbly this fibroadenoma has developed since then.  Lumps are always worrying, but as you've already recently had one removed you know what it is.  Sadly there's no easy way with fibroadenoma though because we don't get to just ignore lumps, not even when we know we're prone to fibroadenoma.

I realise you're not in your teens or 20s but the general situation should still settle as you age, mine did go on into my 30s and even now at 41 although I don't have fibroadenoma anymore I still have very fibrous breasts.  If you can settle your mind and live with them that would be best, you just have to learn to take more care when checking for lumps etc. but your breast specialist could talk to you about that.

    Take care,
