Tonsil tumour

Hi all, new to this i havnt been diagnosed as yet have an appointment next friday with ent. I have had a sore throat for about 4 weeks an decided to make an appointment with my gp. I decided that i would check my throat with a torch to see if i had any inflamation and what i saw horified me. A tumour that started at my right tonsil an reached the dangly bit in the middle. I am male aged 56 and unfortunately a smoker and drink whiskey witch puts me in a higher risk cat. I had a dental chec up 4 weeks ago and he didnt mention any problems so i am guessing this thing has grown to this size in 4 weeks. I have trouble swallowing *** ok has any one has had this or similar.

Ok just an update saw the ent doc,a bit uncommital as expected had a biopsy taken and will have a mri scan in the next two weeks then an appointment in two weeks to talk about results. At least the ball is rolling will update as i know,another two weeks of worrying .

    Hi Deburg. Welcome to the forum.

    I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications. 

    Tonsils are part of the lymphatic system, and hence will respond to infections by swelling. As it's developed so quickly, an infection would appear to be a distinct possibility.  You can check out the symptoms for tonsilitis here.

    Hi Deburg.

    Your experience seems similar to mine, although I had a biopsy under general anaesthetic ("panendoscopy") two weeks after the MRI.  SInce you've had the biopsy already, you might escape that particular torture :)

    The MRI isn't the most pleasant experience but it doesn't hurt!  My advice is to take a CD that you're reasonably familiar with, containing a lot of fairly short tracks, and just try to follow the music while the machine bangs and bumps around you.  I also suggest you ask the operator to turn the internal fan up to maximum, since you'll get warm during the process. Also ask the operator to count down the scans so you know how many are left to go.  Each scan takes typically 256 seconds (just over four minutes).

    Hi, thanks for the responce and advice. I dont think the mri machine will bother me too much,its more the wait to find anything out but i guess its the same for all of us. What stage are you at now?well i hope.

    After all my tests, MRI, and general anaesthetic, I was finally given the all-clear back in February. So I had about 2 months of uncertainty and worry.  I hope it all works out as well for you.

    Hi all ,am now a member of the club no one wants to join. Diagnosed yesterday morning with non hodgkin lymphoma,high grade b cell . Had to go back and see the blood doc in the afternoon and have some blood tests done. The doc looks at the mri results and tells me i need another one of my head as a 1cm legion has been spotted on the front right side of my head. He said it may be the lymphoma but thinks it is more likely to be a meningioma brain tumour prob spelt that wrong,just about coming to terms with the lymphoma now one more thing to start stressing about.
