Tonsil cancer

Hi

My husband (54) has been diagnosed (last Friday) with tonsil cancer. He has had a sore throat for a month and we found a lump. I am really scared for him. We have two young children and he is an amazing father. We have a MRI booked for tomorrow and then we are seeing his consultant again on Tuesday. I lost my brother to a brain tumoour and so I am fearing the worst. He means so much to us and apart from a really sore throat does not feel unwell.

  • Hi there,

I am sorry to hear about your husbands diagnosis.
I too, have been diagnosed with throat cancer and am currently mid way through 6 weeks of radiotherapy.
It's a daunting word to hear but there are quite advanced techniques now in treatment and the success rate is quite good for this type.

I am stage 1 and was told by consultant that looking to cure it and although having to go through treatment for, it does not always have to be doom and gloom and hopefully he will get through the treatment required and be one of the many success stories.

Feel free to chat away or ask any questions and i'll happily share my own experience and journery if it helps.

    Best wishes to you all.

    Kind regards
    Ian

  • Hi Ian

Thank you for your positive reply. We had MRI today and see our consultant again on Tuesday.  It's the waiting and limbo that is the hardest. I hope you are coping with the treatment. Have they offered surgery? Are you having any side effects?

  • Hi Sara-Jane,

I agree that the waiting and not knowing is the worst part. So you only have 4 sleeps until you see the consultant again and discuss whats next. Once you find out the treatment plan then you can both start to properly deal with.
I had surgery to remove most of the tonsil (sometimes not all can be removed due to nature of where is apparantly).
Am on 6 weeks of radiotherapy and just finished my third week. First 2 weeks was fine but some side effects kicking in this week, but have wonderful help and support and treatment from staff.

I wish you both well and hope, like many others your husband is offered a positive prognosis with treatment.
Keep me posted on how it all goes next week as I will be thinking of you both and again, feel free to ask any questions that I can try and help with.

Stay strong and as positive as you can be and let me know if there is any way i can help at all.

    Kind regards
    Ian
