Very worried - swollen lymph gland in neck

Hi,

Apologies for the long post.

For the past few months or so i keep getting  swollen and tender glands on the right side of my neck, just below my jaw. It is quite painful in that area if i move my head to the right. The tenderness usually lasts about a week or two and then seems to go away however my gland still remains abit enlarged. The soreness goes away but then reappears every few weeks  and this has been going on for a few months now so im very worried that something isn't right. I saw my Gp when it first happened and was told i was probably fighting off an infection somewhere (even though i had no obvious signs or symptoms of an infection) and not to worry. Today i visited the same GP who again told me that i probably have an infection somewhere. He checked me over and saw no signs of ear, throat infection and no high temperature. I generally feel fine, however I am feeling very fatigued but i am 19 weeks pregnant so this could be why. He looked through previous blood work i had done as part of my pregnancy and noticed that in one of them that my white blood count was slightly high. Two weeks ago i had a blood test carried out to look for infection as i was experiencing abdominal pain. I was told that everything was fine and that what i was experiencing was growing pains as a result of my pregnancy. I asked my GP why they said everything was fine if my white blood count was high. He informed me that it was only raised a trivial amount so they would have said it was normal. He therefore ordered me to have another blood test to see if anything has changed, and also wants to check my thyroid. I had this today and will get results back next week. This has my very worried and he even mentioned the word cancer, although he said he isnt concerned i have this. Ive since been looking online (which i know i shouldn't) and am now worried i could have cancer, leukaemia, lymphoma etc. My grandad died from leukaemia and i am petrified. I don't think the swollen gland has anything to do with my pregnancy as i was experiencing symptoms before i got pregnant. Im just so worried that something is wrong as there appears to be no reason why the gland is swollen, and my white blood count was slightly raised. Does anyone know if i should be concerned?

Thank you

  • Just checking back in to see if you received your results. I have been following this thread throughtout the years. Similar symptoims no answers...UGH

  • It's funny you have wrote to this today as iv just been for an xray at the dentist. Iv still not had my ultrasound even after pestering so my dentist is emailing them ASAP. Iv had 10 days of penicillin and nothings changed at all. But it's very clear something is wrong on my xray. It turns out we think it's a hydroid bone! But she's not 100% sure because she's not ent. I'm hoping her emailing them will get the ball rolling I feel like I have just been getting fobbed off constantly and being told it's anxiety. I'm not sure if I can post a picture here for you to see xx

  • Yes I have been told anxiety as well. I do a lot of poking and prodding and I think in doing so I have caused one on my right side to swell and it is painful.

  • I think it does give us anxiety naturally but it's not caused by it iv been in touch with ent my ultrasound is Monday so I will keep you updated just keep pushing for tests. It's taken me 7 months to be listened to finally getting somewere. Keep ringing your doctors xx

  • Hi Smadds88

Hoping you're better and made some progress with finding out what was going on.

I've been experiencing very similar since June...was luckily referred urgently by my GP in June due to having my right tonsil swollen also (which still remains that way).  GP couldn't figure what the swollen tonsil was.   ENT at hospital did a throat scopy but everything was pretty congested so visibility on camera was poor...positively they said they couldn't see anything sinister.

They sent me home with anti gastric meds (omeprazole and gaviscon after meals).  It helped a little but not much and I'm now waiting for a follow-up.  ENT said they'd call me back after 8 weeks.  However, since last week, right side of throat is swollen and hard to the feel...gland is also sore and painful to the touch.  I feel a lot of constant acidity and subsequent burning feeling in my throat...goes to ears too sometimes.

Please do update with how you get on.

    Best Wishes

  • Hiya - I'm having issues with my lymph nodes and have done since last December.

one of the nodes which I believed was a node also was apparently a wing to my hyoid bone, that was what the head of ent clinic said so it could be something like that. Although I'm going back as I have multiple lymph nodes in several areas one super painful which isn't the one that's a hyoid bone lol z

  • Hiya... Iv had swollen glands for around 3 weeks now, I have no pain, no  cough and no sore throat. My neck has been pretty stiff and I have no clue what this is. I'm pretty severe anemic so I don't know if it's to do with that or is just a underlying throat infection. Me in myself I feel fine except this stiff neck. I have a really bad habit of googling so recently Iv been scared I have cancer or another serious illness, which I know is unlikely because I have no other symptoms and I'm only 14. Thank you, can anyone put me at ease?

  • Did you get any update, AnneAnne? I am having similar discomfort under the chin near tonsils since past one week. Not sure what it is and if I am overreacting.

  • Sorry if this post is no longer active but reading your post and peoples reply's this is exactly what's going on with me at the moment the left side of my neck feels swollen but isn't noticeable to others.

sometimes I have pain other days I don't I can't feel a "lump" but it's very tender in certain spots under my jaw bone.

im hoping the doctor will investigate with blood tests but everything going on with Covid at the moment seems to be stopping them doing anything

  • Hi maii.

I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

How long have you had your symptoms?  If think most doctors agree the time to see a GP is 4-6 weeks after the node first appears.  This is because a lymph node can naturally remain swollen for a month or so, although many subside in a few days.

If it's less than 4-6 weeks and you don't have any "B" symptoms (drenching night sweats, severe itching, severe fatigue) then it should be ok to hang on for a bit.  If it's approaching that time, or you have any "B" symptoms, then see your GP.  My GP surgery is still seeing patients, but in a Covid-safe manner.
