Hello

Hi guys...My name is Mo i am 63 and happily married to my wife Annette. I live in a wee village called Fintry near Stirling.
Just under went surgery for throat cancer (5 tumors removed) still very sore and still quite a bit of difficulty eating.
I am going today to have a mask fitted ready for 6 weeks of radio and chemo, one chemo at the start and one at the end.
Looking for any advice on what i should be expecting and if there is any thing i can do to help the process.
Not looking forward to it but if it cures me then i suppose it will be a small price to pay.
Look forward to chatting.

  • Hi Mo,

I just wanted to stop by to give you a warm welcome to the forum and wish you well for your appointment to have your radiotherapy mask fitted today.

We have had many members on the forum, past and present, that have had throat cancer and hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and advice. One of our regulars, [@Vatch]‍, may be a good person to talk about this as they have a blog which charts their whole journey and now that I've mentioned him in this post I'm sure he'll pop by when he can to say hello and offer his words of wisdom.

We have some information on our website about throat cancer just here and our cancer nurses are just a phone call away on 0808 800 4040, so do feel free to give them a call when you're feeling up to it.

Best of luck with the radiotherapy and chemo Mo, we hope everything goes smoothly and that you don't experience too many side effects.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks Steph...Look forward to chatting as i think it can only help things go a bit easier.

  • Hi Mo,

Nice to hear from someone from Fintry.  I'm from the other side of the Campsie Fells but drove out your way every week going to oboe lessons in Arnprior (and sometimes just for a walk or a drive).  I live in Jersey now but am a Bishopbriggs girl.

My diagnosis is breast cancer so I can't help any with specifics, but I think one thing that belongs to most cancer treatment and types of cancer is to really start looking after yourself (especially your skin and your mouth) just now.  So plenty of fluids (horrible that such a thing must be painful for you just now) and moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.  I do a saltwater rinse regularly for my mouthcare but I imagine you'll have been given specific instructions for caring for your mouth?

Don't overdo it/anything, even on the days that you feel better, stop while you still feel good and get plenty of rest.  My medical team did stress that a lot of the stuff they tell you to do is preventative, and that makes sense, so you won't easily see the benefits but they will be there.  Skin and mouth are two of the easiest ways for infection to get into our bodies which, with cancer treatment, is particularly problematic, so while you are awaiting more information and for things to start, you can at least get looking after these parts of your body underway and help prevent future complications.

Wishing you all the best for your treatment and look forward to hearing how you get on.

Hopefully someone will come on with some knowledge and experience specific to your type of cancer.

    Take care,

    LJx
