  • Hi Billythekid

I’m one of the nurse’s and our moderators have asked us to look at your enquiry to see if we can help.

I’m sorry to read what’s been going on. I’m afraid that nobody on our forum is going to be able to fill in the gaps and explain about your past medical care or arrange any treatment. So unfortunately, I don’t think I’m going to be able to say much that will help.

I know you said that you do not trust doctors, but the only suggestion I have is to speak to your GP about your medical history. As well as their records, they should have been sent reports from the hospital, so hopefully they can explain things.

I think this really is the only way to find out what’s going on. It may be worth taking someone along with you (if you don’t mind). This could be a family member or friend. If you don’t want someone you know to go along, you can see about getting an independent advocate who has no connection to you or the NHS. NHS Choices explains what they do on their website. You can click here to find how to get one.

The advantages of having someone with you are that they can support you during the appointment which can be stressful. They can ask questions to help you understand your situation. They can help you to remember what was said or write things down.

Medical care is complex and doctors often use jargon. So many people find it difficult to remember everything they are told and in some situations, it is all too easy to misunderstand something. A second pair of ears can help.

If you don’t want someone to come along then ask the doctor to write down what you have been diagnosed with. Do be honest with them if you can’t read their writing so they can make it clear for you. If in the appointment there is something you do not understand, then you need to be honest and ask them to explain what they mean.

I hope you don’t mind me making a suggestion, but I wonder if it would help if I gave you some questions to ask your doctor.

Do I have cancer now?Did I have cancer in the past?If yes, what type of cancer was or is it?If it’s cancer, has it spread? If yes, where too?Do I need treatment now?If I need treatment, what will it be and where and when will I have it?If I can’t have treatment, why not?Do I need to be seen by a specialist doctor?Do I need any further investigations or tests? What support can you offer me? Or where can I find support?

I hope the information I have given is of some use and that you know more about your situation soon.

If you would like to talk this over, please give us a call on 0808 800 4040 which is a free phone number. We are here from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.

    Best wishes

    Hi Billythekid,

A very warm welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am sorry to hear about your dilemma. Georgina has given you some good advice, especialy with the questions to ask your GP. Is there another doctor in the practice that you might relate to better? If so it might be worth seeing them instead.

Failing that, it sounds as if it might be a good idea to change to another practice. Whether or not you have cancer, you need to have faith in your GP and it seems as if you lost this some time ago. I have had to move practice once and I cannot praise my new GP highly enough.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine
