Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tonsil.

Hi, Anybody else with this cancer? I was diagnosed 1/12/17 and treatment started 18/12/17. Entered a trial, 25x weekday daily radiotherapy plus 5x Chemotherapy. OK until start of week four, but had to start co codomel last night. Appetite has gone and forcing the fortysips down is a real problem, but have found thin porridge with honey to be good. Really find pureed meals inedible. I know it is only going to get worse over next four weeks. Any tips or thoughts. Thanks.

  • Ahh thanks Paul i so appreciate that !!!

im asking the question could you see the actual tonsil tumour or did it look normal from inside ?

    thanks so much x

  • Hi

No. I was unaware of any change in my tonsils.  I had an enlarged  symptomless lymph node in my neck and sought advice on that. It was only following biopsy of that and in the weeks following could I see anything on my tonsil. Then had tonsillectomies which confirmed diagnosis. Aside from the lump in my neck I knew, felt and saw nothing of note. I thought maybe I had a quinsy or infection. The lesion did grow tho and could see it before it was surgically removed

  • Ahh I'm panicking because afew folk have  said  they couldn't see anything but my 'thing' at the back of throat looks quite big like afew CMs I'd say ?! Xx

  • Don't stress about it mine was inside the tonsil about 4 cms not everyone can see and ti be honest I didn't look. It was only the enlarged lymph node that brought it to my attention. Remember h p v tumours respond excellent to treatment. There's an excellent cure rate.

  • Understandable. I googled far too much and it all took s terrible toll on my sanity!

From your new thread I note you have been diagnosed with a HPV+ lesion. That is good news and responds really.. really well to treatment.

Sizewise my tonsil cancer did get quite big before it was removed. Not so big to interfere with anything much but was pretty obvious.

No lymph node lumps?  If it is only the tonsils then you fall into the best category for treatment.

  • Ahh ok darling ...massive neck , getting bigger by week ...trying to just let it be you know guys & not appear scared in front of my family ...but I'm abit scared if I'm honest !!!

    plus I bloody love food

  • A lot even , scared that is ...I'm 40 with a 20 & 22yr old & they need me xx

  • Oh. Note you have a neck lump from the other thread.

‘Welcome to the club that no-one wants to join’.

My treatment : Neck biopsy. Tonsillectomies and modified neck dissection to remove offending lymph node and its nearby friends.. just in case. Then radiotherapy and three sessions of chemo. Very much ‘belt and braces’ job to cover everything. From initial consultation late September  to last radiotherapy treatment by early January.

    They fixed me. Great people.

  • Hi Kate scared us perfectly understandable we were all scared. In my dreams I went to my own funeral so you're not alone brkng scared. H p v driven tumours have an excellent response to treatment keep hold if that thought. As my oncologist said ti me if he was to get cancer mine would be the one he would want to get although treatment s brutal success rate is good. Hold onto that thought.
If we can help you just ask.

  • We all live food top tip eat as much as you can for next few weeks from being put in cancer pathway I was exactly 63 days to treatment starting. Once you're diagnosed theres masks ti be made treatment protocol to be out in place. The actual radiotherapy needs planning which takes time. It's possible you'll need chemo don't panic it if you have cisplatin which is the normal one you won't loose your hair it may thin due to radiotherapy I list a crescent shape  at nape of neck which grew back after treatment.
