Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tonsil.

Hi, Anybody else with this cancer? I was diagnosed 1/12/17 and treatment started 18/12/17. Entered a trial, 25x weekday daily radiotherapy plus 5x Chemotherapy. OK until start of week four, but had to start co codomel last night. Appetite has gone and forcing the fortysips down is a real problem, but have found thin porridge with honey to be good. Really find pureed meals inedible. I know it is only going to get worse over next four weeks. Any tips or thoughts. Thanks.

  • Hi. I hope yours turns out to be something non serious but i can only advise you to insist on getting it checked . Yes you van see mine at the back of my throat at the right tonsil. Its about 2cm. My symptoms were coughing up blood and thsts all really. Now though i can feel it when i swallow. Just because you may not have the same symptoms it means nothing and again just advise you to get checked.

    Good luck

  • Hello sophlouise

i had no symptoms except an enlarged tonsil which I could feel rubbing... then it became red and had white coating and bled on contact so I spat or could taste blood. Bleeding on contact is apparently not a good sign. My ear and throat and generally well being was normal. After my surgery I got ear and throat and tongue pain with alternated taste so this is an area of referred symptoms.

the tonsil looked poorly and just the one side.

My consultant knew instantly before he even put the camera down to check other areas. My scans were obvious too.

Only the consultant can reassure you... they see thirst things all the time.

But it’s very treatable and the aim is for cure.

    Love to you xx

  • Thank you so much that really helps!
I don't know what else to put it down to. Surely there has to be something wrong with me if I'm in constant pain with my throat etc. I had blood tests and they all came back fine. I haven't been coughing up blood or anything. I don't feel like it's a viral thing either, so I'm completely unsure what to do. :(

  • If your GP is blocking you I would be blatant and say you are concerned you have a cancer and would like referring. Be pushy if necessary but do not settle and do nothing. If the ENT consultant has seen you and is not worried I would take their word for it.

  • Thank you for your message! The ENT said my tonsils are swollen but hasn't offered any scans or biopsy to check it further apart from another camera down my throat to watch when I swollow, which I feel like it's the problem.
thank you for all your help I really appreciate it. I'm only 19 so when I feel like I have symptoms of throat cancer my mind goes crazy. X

  • Hi John (and all)

Hope I've jumped in at the right place - just came across this thread while researching tonsil cancer. I was diagnosed early April with SCC Stage T3N2M0 P16+

Been a very quick process and I start 35 days of Radiotherapy 4th May. 2 cycles of Chemo also scheduled.

I'll do my best to follow other people in this elite thread and update my journey as it may help others - as you have all done for me!

    Thanks

  • Hi BW. Hope you are good. Sorry to hear that you too have fallen foul of this nasty affliction.

I too was pleased at the rapidity with which everything happened once I was picked up by the medics.

On my initial consultation the ENT Cons. was very positive. He was absolutely right. The prognosis is excellent.

Be warned tho that it is a rocky road. I hope that all goes as smoothly as possible for you.

Well worth checking out Vatch’s blog which I found via his thread here.

I hope all goes well. Do update here as best you can and please feel free to message me. I am a year out from treatment and have recovered fine with no issues. Hopefully that provides you with a degree of optimism.

Do you have good support at home? Hopefully this COVID19 business will not be too much of an imposition.

Wishing you well and every success.

  • Hey Paul

Thanks for coming back to be and glad to see you're getting through it, in what appears pretty good time!

I've read through gammaraygary and also [@RadioactiveRaz]‍  blogs. (how does one tag a member?)

I just set up my own here

COVID 19 is a menace, what with starting chemo, but the hospital is pretty confident all will be okay.
