Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tonsil.

Hi, Anybody else with this cancer? I was diagnosed 1/12/17 and treatment started 18/12/17. Entered a trial, 25x weekday daily radiotherapy plus 5x Chemotherapy. OK until start of week four, but had to start co codomel last night. Appetite has gone and forcing the fortysips down is a real problem, but have found thin porridge with honey to be good. Really find pureed meals inedible. I know it is only going to get worse over next four weeks. Any tips or thoughts. Thanks.

  • We’re you sick before ? What made u sick do u know ?

i have a good supply of books in fact for the lastb3 weeks I haven’t turned a page in any book or newspaper n I am an avid reader

  • I wasntt sick before, your throat makes a thick mucous during recovery and it's just horrid, that's what made me sick, either chocking sick or just swallowing it makes you nauseated... Sorry to be a downer...xxx might not happen to you, you could be the exception to the rule!

  • Hi vero

    welcome to the forum

getting the right radiotherapy for this treatment is key not only for recovery but also to minimise the long and short term after effects

i have sent you my blog it goes into things in a bit more detail and technology has moved on since

i had 30 session of Tomotherapy and 6 weekly 8 hour sessions of cisplatin

i am now 4 years out and doing very well, I have great taste I still get tired but life is good

let us know how you get on

  • In paula

no I have no pm with John .... John if you are out there I hope all is ok

mmmm I’m surprised you have no taste, you should have something come back by now ... what radiotherapy did you have IMRT, VMAT

get used to having a dry mouth for a few months yet. I got a saliva spray from the doctors ... it comes in several flavours ... but to be honest it just getting used to it

    drink lots of water

always have a cup of liquid next to you when eating as even now it’s easy for me to choke on my food, liquid always helps it slip down

get some diphlam from you doctors, it a mouthwash and will help you keep your mouth clean. Your saliva it the mouths natural antiseptic and as you have limited saliva, the bacteria in your mouth can thrive.

also get a small headed toothbrush and once you have brushed your teeth go over them with this brush

oral hygiene is of the upmost importance now and especially in the early days after treatment

i hope that taste starts to improve soon

  • Hi Paula

saw Vatch mention small headed toothbrush on Amazon I got 3 called curaprox £13 but best money we’ve spent they have over 5600 bristles and are brill. Soft on teeth n gums I get compliments from nurses on my teeth n gums

keep up with it something will come back I am sure

off for blast the 8 to go !

  • Thank you for your warm words, Paula!

    Yes, I’m HPV p-16 positive.

Sorry for delay with my response, it was really difficult time for me and my husband. I decided to continue in Turkey, because of new Varian Edge linear accelerator. Here I already took my 6th chemo, but first cisplatin. And now I’m done with 5 radiotherapies.

Feeling not so good, nausea and tiredness. But as I can understand, it’s not a worst problem yet)

  • Hi Vatch!

Thank you for your forum. It’s really helpful for me!

I chose Varian Edge. It’s maybe could be more damaging than tomotherapy, but targeted and hopefully, minimize after effects. It’s great to hear you are 4 years out. Motivational for all of us. But sorry to hear about tiredness.

Second week of radiation therapy starts tomorrow. Hopefully, this week I’ll be okay.

Little scared because of PEG, is it possible to handle without this?
