Traumatic aborted colonoscopy - now long wait for CT scan.

Hi there

I was sent for an urgent colonoscopy as my GP was worried I might have bowel cancer. I took my moviprep Monday and Tuesday morning and then went to Hospital. I was not given an appointment time, only an arrival time. I was taken to a small room at 2.20pm and fitted with a canula, which was quite painful. I was then left in that room by myself until 4.00pm. I was getting increasingly anxious from the waiting and I wasn't allowed to go to reception to see my partner, and he wasnt allowed in to see me. At 4.00pm a nurse came to tell me I was next, and I was taken to the exam room at 4.30pm. Since I was very anxious I asked for the maximum sedation and they gave me 5mg mizadolam and 100ug of Fentanyl. I felt a very slight drunk sensation, and then it passed. I was completely lucid, and recall the whole horrific ordeal. The pain was indescribable. I was sobbing and pleading for more painkillers. They decided to stop, which made me even more upset because I didnt want them to abandon the procedure, just give me a GA or more painkillers! The doctor said he saw the left side of my colon and that it was totally normal. I was allowed to leave after 10 minutes, and at no point did I feel woozy, sleepy or any effects that I had been told to expect from the sedation. They have now told me I need to wait 3 weeks to hear back about arranging a CT scan to view the side of my colon they couldn't reach. Obviously, I am really upset and quite angry - a) because the painkillers didn't work b) because the procedure wasn't completed and c) because I now have an anxious wait for the CT scan, if I even get it.

Has anyone else had this experience? Everyone I have spoken to said they didnt feel any pain, only discomfort. I'm now terrified of ever having the procedure again. Why didn't the painkillers have any effect on me? Can I ask for it again under general anaesthetic? What happens if they refuse the CT scan or I have to wait months for an appointment? Should I make a complaint to the hospital? I'm really unsure what to do.

  • Hi if there going to give genral anasthetic you will not know a thing .so dont worry ime not a dr and cant give advice but i used imodium but i had crohns disease so diarea is one of symptoms maybe have a word with your gp see what he suggests .if your realy concerned it may be causing anxiaty and then you tence up everywhere which makes it worse fear and anxiaty can be awfull ive just got out of haspital with sepsis thought my number was up . But they may give you some tomazopam for a few days but i didnt say that it realy relaxes you gp gave me it low does when i lost my partner i was going to pieces so get in to see gp show him your post rather than explain it all as we forget things as soon as we sit down .paul

  • Hi, I am so sorry to hear you’ve had Sepsis, that is dreadful. I had to have this procedure done due to changes in bowel habits, whereby I wasn’t going very much without laxatives, despite cutting out meat and having tons of vegetables .

It was the MoviPrep the day before which had me running to the toilet. I hope that after having the CT scan, that they find nothing and will no longer need the colonoscopy.

My only concern with having general anaesthetic, is that it really doesn’t agree with me and they really don’t like putting me out. However, if that is the case they have told me I need to have double the amount of MoviPrep the day before. Last week I took all the MoviPrep they gave me and it became clear at the end, so don’t see why I would need double the amount.

  • Hi maybe there was some still in stuck . Its funny aur bowles are the thermometer of our emotionss as soon as we get stressed bang it all goes wierd ive crohns diseas a bit of stress and ime all over the place .you can ring cancer uk nurse helpline numbers on here they will maybe enlighten you better and relax hearing from a expert i still stand by what i said about going to gp . I know its  a difficult thing to discus but after 8 days in hospital all my dignity gone lol try not to worry its irobably the way they do it doubling up it may not be as bad as you think but go see your gp or you will get yourself in such a state with worry its so easy done .p

  • Hi again if you look on u.tube theres a realy cleaver guy explaining fibromialgia .so if you go on to u.tube put in dr eric berg fibromyalgia and his video will come up on the subject its facinating may explain your bowle probs but it your view that counts seemed very lodgical to me as my partner sufferd same thing as he said . It may help you or may not i took the trouble to look for you so look yourself eh best wish paul

  • I’ve just had my colonoscopy this morning which had to be aborted as they couldn’t proceed due to gamma loop(?).It was also very uncomfortable and painful. I’ve had this procedure 4 times over the last 16 years and the sedation has definitely got less and not been as effective. The first two I had in 2004 and 2006 I didn’t feel or remember a thing and took a while to come round after the procedure.

The one I had 5 years ago I was unaware of things until I woke up halfway through and it was painful.

The doctor who did it today did my first two and I commented that the sedation wasn’t as effective which he denied 5- I had 4mg of Midazolam.

I too wil have to have a CT colonoscopy. I’m sure it would be more cost effective to increase the sedation rather than pay for expensive scans!

  • They dont listen at times you the consultant said i may need a coloscopy even after i told her they had to abandon mine as i had a loopy bowle same as you ive an apointment next week so if she says it again ime going to say dont you listen ct scan may show something it may aomething simple dosnt take much for aur bowles to act up even thoe i have crohns lifes not been easy and i found stress realy effects me thats why i suggested gp it may not be the cause of your problem but it certainly will make it worse i can tell your worried and can understand .i had to wait a month to find out if i had cancer i because of shortages of pathologists it realy got to me stopped sleeping even thoe i didnt feel worried its its subconsious stress that gets you i still would go to gp are you drinking 2 litrs of water a day lots of us dont and something simple like that can cause constipation .or make it worse .paul

  • Hello again

Once again this is Harriett and I have never known this before but I had to re register yet again! My saved log in details were just not being accepted.

Today I had my CT bowel scan!  My posts above descibed the experience I had with the attempted colonoscopy/very unsympathetic doctor and the pain it caused me.

Yesterday I took the doses of Gastrografin which were foul to taste but only a fraction of the amount compared to the awful Moviprep concontion.  I stuck rigidly to the liquied only diet and while I know the Gastrografin is not exactly designed as a laxative it certain had that effect but not until exactly 12 hours after the first dose yesterday morning.  I was beginning to think it was having no effect and my bowels did need clearing (only here can we talk about bowels and their contents!) but at 10pm last night things got going.  A little more this morning and my scan was at 9.30 so I was concerned I was not "clear" enough but the nursing staff assured me it would be fine.

A canular put in my arm to take the bowel relaxant drug ( no dye was given) and then in went the tube to pump air inside me. The good thing compared to last time was the 3 staff were very nice and explained everything before it happened.  I have to say it was somewhat painful having my bowel inflated but with a few moans and groans I got through it.  The scan itself was quite quick and obviously entirely painless. I do not consider myself a wimp at all but if something hurts then it flippin hurts.

All done and a cuppa drank then on my way.  The only thing now is waiting to see what  the scan shows as I had no symptoms whatsoever and this test was purely because a family member died recently of bowel cancer at quite a young age. I am now nervous to get these results but have to do 2 things:

    1. Try to stop worrying as I have no reason to think anything bad going on.

2, Give myself a shake because in that hospital today I know I would have been among people with already diagnosed serious conditions or having scans which will show they are the unlucky ones.

I will be back here to announce (fingers crossed) a clear and healthy bowel.  Thank you for reading.

  • Hi Everyone

I have just received my results from CT scan and the aborted colonoscophy. (nearly 3 months).

I have Ulcerative Colitis, which I believe is just in my lower bowel only. Thankfully not the dreaded C word. This was picked up by the biopsies which were taken from the lower bowel before I went into one having the colonoscopy. Interestingly I too suffer with fibromyalgia so could this be a reason for the severe discomfort during the colonoscopy like some of you have suggested?? Will remember to state about the fibromyalgia if I have to have one again (although I intend to plead for a general anaesthetic) . I never want to experience a colonoscophy ever again!!

Just waiting now for an appointment with the gastroenterologist (will that be another 3 months)?

Good luck Harriet and all of you waiting for your results I wish you well.

    Krissie

  • Thank you Krissie and I hope everything goes well for you.
