Traumatic aborted colonoscopy - now long wait for CT scan.

Hi there

I was sent for an urgent colonoscopy as my GP was worried I might have bowel cancer. I took my moviprep Monday and Tuesday morning and then went to Hospital. I was not given an appointment time, only an arrival time. I was taken to a small room at 2.20pm and fitted with a canula, which was quite painful. I was then left in that room by myself until 4.00pm. I was getting increasingly anxious from the waiting and I wasn't allowed to go to reception to see my partner, and he wasnt allowed in to see me. At 4.00pm a nurse came to tell me I was next, and I was taken to the exam room at 4.30pm. Since I was very anxious I asked for the maximum sedation and they gave me 5mg mizadolam and 100ug of Fentanyl. I felt a very slight drunk sensation, and then it passed. I was completely lucid, and recall the whole horrific ordeal. The pain was indescribable. I was sobbing and pleading for more painkillers. They decided to stop, which made me even more upset because I didnt want them to abandon the procedure, just give me a GA or more painkillers! The doctor said he saw the left side of my colon and that it was totally normal. I was allowed to leave after 10 minutes, and at no point did I feel woozy, sleepy or any effects that I had been told to expect from the sedation. They have now told me I need to wait 3 weeks to hear back about arranging a CT scan to view the side of my colon they couldn't reach. Obviously, I am really upset and quite angry - a) because the painkillers didn't work b) because the procedure wasn't completed and c) because I now have an anxious wait for the CT scan, if I even get it.

Has anyone else had this experience? Everyone I have spoken to said they didnt feel any pain, only discomfort. I'm now terrified of ever having the procedure again. Why didn't the painkillers have any effect on me? Can I ask for it again under general anaesthetic? What happens if they refuse the CT scan or I have to wait months for an appointment? Should I make a complaint to the hospital? I'm really unsure what to do.

  • Hi I've just had a colonoscopy that was aborted. Had sedation but was in excruciating pain and had bad gas pain after. I would be interested to hear someone's experience of a ct colonography as this may be suggested as an alternative for me. Thanks
  • Hi,

So sorry to hear about your second horrible experience. Most people don't have anything like that level of pain, my guess is that the diverticulitis has caused you to become sensitive and that added to your anxiety and twitchiness has created the extreme pain you experienced. I've had several colonoscopies over the past thirty years and the only time it was ever anything other than mildly unpleasant was when I had ulcers in my colon and the probe touched one of them. The pain then was extreme, so I can empathise with your experience.

The CT scan is a piece of cake in comparison - completely non-invasive with just a canula in your hand through which a dye is passed (assuming you have a CT with contrast).

    Good luck!

  • I had a colonoscopy a few days ago . With lots of sedation  it was the most painful experience that I have had . They had to abandon the procedure as it was to painful . I also now have to have a ct colonoscopy. Which can be no where as bad as the colonoscopy. Even though I'm worried and will be glad when it's all done . The prep is the most disgusting taste ever so dreading taking that again . Hopefully all will be fine .

  • Hi Eve

I am awaiting a colonoscopy and am dreading it as I have fibromyalgia which greatly increases pain sensitivity. Dentistry excruciating, womb biopsy had to be done under G.A. Is it an option to discuss pain control/sedation beforehand to accommodate this. Concerned that I might be under sedated because I wasnt taken seriously. Would hate it to be a nightmare experience because it was inadequite, or they refused to abort the procedure if things got too bad. How diagnostic is a CT scan, and have to say that radiation dose is a concern, coming from a radiologist! See how it goes but finding out more about others' experiences and the realities of this procedure a great help.

  • Had exactly the same thing done.Absolute agony had to stop the procedure could’nt handle the pain .I was begging them to stop extreme pain never ever will I go through that again. I have been scarred for life, I had very little pain relief if any it has taken me four days to recover I couldn’t walk or stand up straight today is the fifth day and I still can’t stand upright I’m just about on my feet today please if anyone has to have a colonoscopy demand a strong pain relief or ask to be sedated for your own benefit

  • Extremely painful colonoscopy even with ‘sedation’

i had a colonoscopy today, I thought the purge was bad enough, how naive was I!   I had no idea how painful this procedure would be.  My gut was already sore, so I opted for sedation, and gas and air.  ‘You’ll be drowsy, the gas and air may make you laugh’.  Hahaha that was a joke I think, I was not expecting anything for than discomfort,   If only they had explained ahead of time what to expect, I could have prepared myself, the sedation did nothing, and I screamed rather than laughed.  I just don’t think any of the pain relief methods worked on me.  I have a high pain threshold, have had two children with no pain relief, so am no shrinking violet.  I don’t want to put anyone off, but do recommend asking a few more questions about what if it becomes painful, will they slow down, or give more pain relief.  I certainly didn’t want the procedure aborted so somehow managed to get through it.

  • Well done for getting through it.

Colonoscopy seems to be one of those things that either go well or badly with nothing in between. The common element of the latter sometimes seems to be diverticulitis.

    Hooe the results are good.

    Best wishes

  • I have just had a traumatic colonoscopy where they couldn't get past my sigmoid descending junction as it was fixed and rigid.  Horrendous pain with sedation and g&a have to be referred back to specialist.  Not looking forward to this as I am dreading them having to do it again but I am going to ask if they can do it under general anesthesia.  Also am due for an endoscopy on monday and am dreading it especially when sedation didn't work for me last time.  Have stopped omeprazole and now feel sick every time I eat and feel tired all the time - anybody got any idea why?

  • I had my colonoscopy Dec 1st 2018. I was left traumatised and still have difficulty in forgetting the excruciating pain. I had gas and air, which did nothing, I was asked if I wanted the sedative and I said yes, as at this point I was screaming in pain, I heard the Endoscopist say get her on her back, and they were telling me to shuffle over on the bed and all the time he was carrying on with the procedure. I cannot believe they let me suffer the pain, it was so bad I thought my heart would give out because of the pain. I have emailed and put in a complaint to the hospital. It’s the 4th day now and I have not been to the toilet, and at the top of my stomach in the middle just under my bust I feel as though there is a blockage and it’s very uncomfortable. I never had this before colonoscopy, and I was always regular going to the toilet.

  • I had my colonoscopy on Nov 30 2018. I was also left traumatised and can agree with everything from the pain to shuffle over the bed. I had three biopsy taken and suffered a tear with one. Got tremendous pain as I got home and had to go back and be admitted to hospital for 24hrs. It is now more than a week since colonoscopy and I still feel uncomfortable under my bust, has yours cleared up?
