Awaiting breast lump biopsy results

Just wanted to say hello to everyone and tell you how much I empathise with all of you. I can't respond to all the posts I've read and I can't offer advice or help as this is all new to me too, but I have read many of your stories.

I'm in my 50s and have very lumpy breasts that make examination difficult to say the least (everyone that examins me comments on how hard it is to tell!) I've had one all clear trip to the breast clinic before for a cyst and yesterday confirmed many more of those, but I was actually there for another lump. Although mammograms appeared clear, the ultrasound was less definite. I basically have an irregular edged lump that does have a blood supply. They were super at explaining everything at my appointment and showed me the difference between other parts of my lumpy breasts and the one they then performed the biopsy on - basically like looking at an even, regular mole versus an irregular one. It took some time for them to decide that they definitely would biopsy and I'm holding on to that fact as it obviously didn't scream cancer, but can't avoid the concern, as I'm sure everyone here understands ;) They couldn't see any swelling in lymph nodes, which is positive point number 2!

So, trying to stay positive and busy until 25th and thinking of you all.

    Hi Helen,.

I understand that it can be difficult to diagnose cancer in lumpy breasts.

I am glad to hear that so far all tests have come back clear. and I hope that your current biopsy also comes up with with favorable results. It sounds good, especially with no lymph node involvment, but I can understand your concerns, as I have been through 2 bouts of primary breast cancer along with a few benign lumps. Waiting for results is always a trying time.

Try to distract yourself by keeping busy doing pleasant things.

Keep us posted as to how you get on on 25th. There is always someone here if you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine. I've seen from other posts how much time and effort you put into supporting people here, so thank you again. I hope your own situation is in a positive place now. I deal with difficulties by finding out as much as I can so I am as informed as possible. So that's why I'm here and on the breast cancer site reading as much as possible ... but only for part of my time. The rest, as you say, I'm trying to stay very busy!

I will report back, especially if my results are negative, as I feel it's important for people to be able to see that a biopsy doesn't always mean bad news. I'd love to know what the statistic are here in the UK on negative biopsies, but I can only see Canada and US data online. Those suggest that 60 to 80% of biopsies are actually negative. Another plus point to try to keep in mind!

    Until 25th!

  • Well the wait is over and it isn't good news. Lobular cancer that is both ER+ and HER2+. At the moment all they have detected is a small tumour, but with this type of cancer it is very difficult to see apparently (mammograms are showing completely clear even where the existing tumour is) so an MRI comes next to see if it is the size it appears or whether there are more. More waiting.
