Breast cancer newbie

My name is Angie. On the 26th January I attended my normal mammogram check. On the 14th February I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. I took the decision to have a mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy. I am 60 years of age what do I need them for. Well on the 6th March I had the operation. I had trouble post op with the drains in that they kept de-vaccing. In the end the drain was removed even though I was still carrying seroma. Now three weeks post op i can honestly say I made the right decision even though at the moment I am suffering because i have an infection, I am still very sore and fed up with the fluid retention but hey ho. I have been given the ll clear and am on tablets for the next 5 years but I class myself as one of the lucky ones. I would urge anyone to attend routine scans when they are offered. Good luck to anyone else going through the same.

  • Hi Angi, i'm new here & joined because of my sister being sick, unfortunately in her case is a little too late, or so the docs keep telling us but what you say is very valid. Thanks for raising awareness. Virtual hugs and all the best, Sandy

  • I have just had the same, although originally I had a wide angle excision.  Unfortunately they found further disease and wanted to try another wide angle with radiotherapy  after. I elected to have a mastectomy  the tissue results showed further disease but as my lymph nodes were clear  I do not need any further treatment.  What a relief. I am sure I made the right call. Thankfully had no problems  post op. I also would encourage anyone to attend routine scans.. my scan was my last official  screening.  How lucky am I? Wishing everyone the best.
