New to forum diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer

I was diagnosed in October 2016 with stage 4 bowel cancer which is  inoperable and I have  secondary cancer throughout liver, lungs and testine linings.  Offer of agressive chemo with little prospect of any improvement or shrinkage of main tumour. After discussion with family I took decision to not have chemo but to try and have quality time with family and friends, with prospects of only a few weeks extension of life I wanted to enjoy my time being as strong as I could without dealing with after effects of the chemo. I am 64 years old and desperate to see my 65th birthday in March. I'm married with 2 children and have 4 grandchildren. I have been reading the forum for some time and now just feel ready to talk about it, I would love to hear from anyone at a similar stage, just for genral chat or support.

  • Hi davews sorry to read u sitioution I was reading it and u sound like my mother she has bowel cancer last October she was told it was inoperable they offered chemo she said no because she was so ill last time. We was told it was inoperable because the turmour on blood vessel my mother doesn't want 2 know how long she got. We just taken each day. Take care x

  • Hi  Davews,  I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis it is not an easy decision for anyone to make to not have treatment. I also have bowel cancer and I am on pallative chemo, which is working for me. I do hope that you are not in too much pain and hopefully you will be able to celebrate your birthday with your loved ones. Take care and enjoy every moment you have with your family. Sending you a big virtual hug.x

  • Hi Dave,

Welcome to the forum, I hope you find the support and information that you are looking for.

I'm in a similar position but my Mets weren't as extensive as yours seem to be, so I opted for palliative chemo and I was lucky enough to respond well. It sometimes seems as if we're all involved in a bizarre game of Russian Roulette - trying to balance chemo side effects, quality of life and long odds against the palliative chemo doing much good. Hard decisions, which only we can make.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Hi Hayley, I was diagnosed with bowel cancer 2014, have had stoma, bowel resection and reversal of my stoma, was told everything clear and didnt need mop up chemo. Never had a scan until febuary 2015 as they forgot about me lol unfortunately scan results went missing and never found out until july 2015 that I had cancer in my bowel lining stoma scar and back passage no operations only pallative chemo, had 8 sessions went for my scan december got my results 22nd december, they could not see any cancer but because it is difficult to see cancer in bowel lining I am having another 4 sessions of chemo, I am still in shock lol but hoping they cant find any cancer my next scan. I really hope that your chemo isnt giving you too much side effects and that you have a great response to the chemo, Unfortunately we just have to do what we can to get through this.  Sending you best wishes and a massive virtual hug. X  Susan

  • Hi davews just wondering how u doing hope u ok take care x

  • My friend was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer which had spread to the liver. After two years of Avastin and Oxyplatin all four tumours have gone. No surgery to bowel or removal of tumours in liver either. A miracle... you have to believe in the power of the good doctors and their new medicines.

    All best

  • Hi just seen your post.. Having seen this just wanted to let u know that thinking of yer.. I've had stage 4hodgkins had 25% chance of remission that was four years bk.. Had 6mnths of chemo with one of the chemo withdrawn due to reaction.. Try stay positive stupid comment I know!! But it helps... Always here.

  • I was diagnosed with stage 3 in early 2016. Got all clear after a resection and 6 months chemo (which was hard - oxyplatanin and the pink tablets) a blood test in Oct 2017 showed tumour markers and I had 2 small tumours in my liver and one in the perritineum. A small op to the stomach and a huge liver op thought this had cleared it. Another scan and pet scan in October/Nov 2018 showed infected nodes again in the perriteneum and not operable. I am on pallative chemo now and can only hope for a miracle. I'm now 57 (diagnosed at 54) - its been a helluva journey but keeping up the fight. Some days are depressing as I work to pay the bills and wonder what life will be like for all at home when I'm gone.

  • hi timalloy6711,

sorry to hear your still having to work with all that’s going on with you. It must be so stressful. My wife’s cancer has come back. They found some specks on her peritoneum. Can you off any tips or advice on your experience.

I do hope things get better for you. Take care.
