Mesothelioma

My dad is in the final stages of Mesothelioma. I had no idea until he was diagnosed that this cancer can appear 40 years or more after working with asbestos.  He lives 200 miles away from us and we have been making the journey every three or four weeks watching him try to get used to the prognosis and then cope with the awful pain while trying to stay independent.  He is 85 years old and if one more person says "its a good age" I will scream. He is my dad and I will miss him so much.

  • So sorry your Dad has Mesothelioma. My Mum had that but also had a stroke, she passed away in 2003 age 77. I had never heard of Mesothelioma until my cousins husband had it, then a few years later my Mum was diagnosed with it, although they both had different symptoms.  We never found out where she had contracted it from. Possibly my Dads overalls as he was in contact with asbestos in his work.   I cared for my Mum and saw the terrible pain she lived with.   If you can visit your Dad more often I'm sure he would love to see you. If your Dad lives alone I do hope he has daily help/visitors.   Would he go in a hospice or nursing home so as not to be alone?     My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.  X x

  • So sorry to hear about your situation, it is so difficult. My father was also diagnosed with Mesothelioma last month and has since been given a terminal prognosis. As a plumbing and heating engineer he was exposed to asbestos countless times throughout his life, unfortunately due to the nature of asbestos lying dormant in the body many others will be affected in the years to come. However, early detection of Mesothelioma before symptoms begin to show can increase life expectancy substantially. My family have started a petition appealing for anyone who feels they may have been exposed to Mesothelioma throughout the 90’s to be given regular screenings by the Government. Due to their refusal to acknowledge the dangers of asbestos throughout the 90’s, the Government now have a duty of care to those individuals who have been affected.

It may be too late for my father, but if we can help other families avoid the situation we are in and give them more time to enjoy life with their loved ones it would be a huge achievement.
