Coping with cancer

Hi

My name is Michelle. My husband was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer 11 months ago. We had so many trips that we had to cancel. He went through 8 sessions of chemotherapy and needed 4 blood transfusion and a platelet transfusion due to side effects. He finished radiotherapy a few months ago and it has caused scarring and fibrosis in his lung. His respiratory function has deteriorated by 30% since before radiotherapy. We are now seeing respiratory consultants and he will have an Echocardiogram when they can schedule that because they are concerned about heart damage as well. He has been on very strong dosages of steroids and this whole thing has taken over our lives and he is very depressed that he is no longer the person he was and we can not enjoy going on trips and doing the things we had hoped to do.

I am glad to join and read your commentaries

  • Hi Michelle

Not only has your husband being going through hell - I bet you have too.  What support have you got?  How depressed are you?  Do not give up on doing trips together - perhaps make them little and short - but fun and focus on the moments of fun from such near to home trips- but different experiences?  Just doing different things in your locality can breathe fresh air - we never visit where we live.  Do a tourist board search where you are and identify something near where you have never been - and do it!  I do so feel for you and I hope that you and your husband can enjoy some short new experiences together and for an hour or two forget illness and fear.  Sian x
